What the IIT Roorkee PhD admission for January 2027 covers
IIT Roorkee runs two PhD intakes a year. The Autumn Semester starts in July and the Spring Semester starts in January. This call is the Spring one. Classes for the last Spring intake began in the second week of January, so plan for a similar start.
The admission covers departments and centres across engineering, science, architecture, management and the humanities. Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Physics all take part, along with many more. Each department decides its own areas and its own test or interview, so the department page matters as much as the brochure.
Eligibility
- A master’s degree in the relevant subject, or a qualification the department accepts in its place
- Minimum marks for master’s degree holders: CGPA 6.0 on a 10-point scale or 60% marks for General, GEN-EWS and OBC candidates; CGPA 5.5 or 55% for SC, ST and PwD candidates
- A valid national test score such as GATE, CEED, JEST, UGC-NET or CSIR-NET, where the department asks for one
- Candidates holding their own fellowship, sponsored candidates and part-time candidates have separate routes; the brochure sets out each one
Fellowship and duration
IIT Roorkee gives institute assistantships to full-time PhD scholars who qualify for them. The amount follows the rates set for IITs and the terms in the information brochure, so read the brochure for your own category before you apply. Scholars on an external fellowship, such as CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF or DST-INSPIRE, draw that fellowship instead.
How to apply
Applications are online only. Open the doctoral admissions page, choose Apply Online, and register before the deadline. The page also lists the FAQ, which answers the common questions on categories, documents and fees. Late applications are not accepted, so do not leave the form to the last evening.

How to prepare for this application
- Pick the department before the form. IIT Roorkee lets each department set its own areas and its own test. Read your department's research pages first.
- Check which national test your department accepts. GATE, CEED, JEST, UGC-NET and CSIR-NET are not interchangeable across departments.
- Read the information brochure for your category. Regular, sponsored, part-time and external-fellowship routes have different rules and different paperwork.
- Name a research area you can talk about. Interviews here usually start from what you wrote on the form.
- Find a supervisor first. Search IIT Roorkee faculty in your field on our Find a supervisor page.
