What the IIT Mandi PhD admission in chemical sciences covers

The School of Chemical Sciences invites applications in all broad areas of chemistry. The advertisement adds that students with an MSc in Physics are welcome to apply, along with other interdisciplinary subjects including biology and materials science. So the door is wider than the school’s name suggests.

Eligibility

  • An MTech or equivalent in chemical engineering, chemical technology or another relevant discipline; or a BS-MS, MSc or equivalent in chemistry or chemical sciences, any branch, or a relevant discipline
  • Or a BTech, BE, BS or equivalent in chemical engineering, chemical technology, chemistry or chemical sciences, any branch, or another relevant discipline
  • BS-MS, MSc, BTech, BE and BS holders also need one national level examination: CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, NET-LS, NET-PhD, a valid GATE qualification, DST-INSPIRE or an equivalent. Two years of professional experience after the qualifying degree is accepted in its place
  • Self-sponsored candidates do not need the national examination
  • Students graduating in 2026 may apply. They need the original degree certificate, or at least a provisional marksheet, at the time of admission

Exemption from the GATE or national test

The advertisement lists two exemptions. A BTech, BE or BS from a Centrally Funded Technical Institute, from any institute in the top 100 of the NIRF overall ranking at the time of application, or from a Himachal Pradesh government institution or university, needs a CGPA of at least 7.5 on 10 for General and EWS candidates, 7.25 for OBC-NCL and 7.0 for SC, ST and PwD. A BS-MS or MSc from an IIT, IISER, IISc or IIM, or from any institute in the NIRF top 100, carries the same CGPA bars. The NIRF rank must be in the overall category for the year of admission.

How to prepare for this application

  • Check the exemption route first. If your degree is from a CFTI or an NIRF top-100 institute and your CGPA clears the bar, you may not need GATE or NET at all.
  • Read the PhD ordinances. IIT Mandi links its 2026-onwards PhD ordinances in the advertisement; they set the coursework and progress rules you will live under.
  • Say which area of chemistry. The call is open to all broad areas, so the form is where you narrow it. Name the chemistry you want to do.
  • MSc Physics and interdisciplinary backgrounds should still apply. The advertisement says so in a footnote that is easy to miss.
  • Get the NOC early if you are employed. You need it at the interview itself.
