What the CSIR-IIIM PhD admission for January 2027 covers
The notice lists nine specialisations:
- Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry
- Plant Sciences and Agrotechnology
- Fermentation Technology
- Pharmacology and Biological Sciences
- Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
- Organic and Synthetic Chemistry
- Analytical and Instrumental Sciences
- Biotechnology of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants
- Bio-informatics and Chemo-informatics
These areas sit together for a reason. IIIM takes plants from the Himalayan region, finds the molecules that do something useful, works out how they act, and tries to turn them into a medicine. A PhD here can start in a field, a fermenter or a mass spectrometer.
Eligibility
- An MSc or equivalent degree in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Chemical Sciences or Pharmaceutical Sciences
- A valid national fellowship: CSIR, ICMR, DBT or DST-NET JRF, GPAT or an equivalent
- AcSIR’s own eligibility rules apply on top. Read the eligibility document on the AcSIR site for your stream
Fellowship and duration
Scholars come in on a national fellowship, so the agency that awards it sets the amount. The notice does not state a figure, so check the terms of your own fellowship. The programme is full-time and begins in January 2027.
How to apply
Apply online through the AcSIR admissions portal and choose CSIR-IIIM Jammu as your institute. The notice points to acsir.res.in for the detailed advertisement, and to the IIIM site for faculty research areas. Look up the scientists in your area before you apply, because at a CSIR laboratory the group you join shapes the whole degree.

How to prepare for this application
- Match your fellowship to the area. GPAT suits the pharmacology and formulation side; CSIR-NET chemistry suits natural products and synthesis.
- Read the faculty pages first. Nine specialisations is a wide spread, and naming the group you want to join is the strongest thing you can do.
- Know the plant-to-molecule chain. IIIM's work runs from collection through isolation, structure, activity and pre-clinical study. Say where in that chain you fit.
- Keep your fellowship award letter ready. A valid national fellowship is an eligibility condition here.
- Apply on the AcSIR portal. IIIM hosts the research; AcSIR runs the admission and awards the degree.
