Why this role matters

Full-time seats with scholarship are the main route into a funded Ph.D. in India. This call has 125 of them and closes later than most January 2027 calls. That gives you time to plan, or a second chance if you missed others.

Eligibility

  • Engineering (CSE, ECE, EEE, Civil, Mechanical): 6.5 CGPA or 60% in both Bachelor’s and Master’s (M.E./M.Tech. in a relevant subject); 6.0 CGPA or 55% for SC/ST
  • Exceptional B.Tech./B.E. graduates of a reputed institute with CGPA 9.0 or more may also apply
  • Applied Sciences: 6.5 CGPA or 60% in both Bachelor’s and Master’s (M.Sc. or M.Tech. in a relevant subject); 6.0 or 55% for SC/ST
  • Humanities and Social Sciences: 6.0 CGPA or 55% in both Bachelor’s and Master’s; 5.5 or 50% for SC/ST
  • Scholarship: GATE in the relevant discipline (at any time), or a JRF/UGC/NET/CSIR/DST-INSPIRE or similar national fellowship
  • Part-time applicants need a No Objection Certificate from their employer

Holders of INSPIRE, UGC-CSIR or similar fellowships can apply for full time regardless of vacancies. The institute may reject an application if no faculty member can guide the proposed area. Selection is on academic record, a written test by the department and a personal interview. Shortlists are posted on the website; no letters are sent.

Pay and duration

  • Full-time with scholarship: scholarship and HRA as per Government of India norms; the brochure gives no figure
  • Self-financed and sponsored: full time, without scholarship
  • Up to ₹50,000 support for strong scholars to attend conferences abroad, as stated in the brochure
  • Fees: see the institute’s fee structure

How to apply

Read the Ph.D. information brochure (PDF) first. Pay the application fee through the payment link on the NIT Goa Ph.D. admissions page, then submit through the Ph.D. online application portal (a Google form). Upload the fee receipt, the filled application form (Annexure-I) and all supporting documents merged into one PDF. Apply separately, with a separate fee, for each department. The last date is 15 November 2026, with no extensions. For queries, the brochure gives phdadmissions@nitgoa.ac.in.

How to prepare for this application

  • Match a supervisor first: check the faculty pages of your department and name areas that a faculty member works on.
  • Prepare for the written test: revise the core GATE syllabus of your branch; departments set their own papers.
  • Write a one-page research plan: a clear problem, why it matters and how you would start.
  • Keep documents ready: marksheets with CGPA, GATE or fellowship proof, category and NOC certificates as one PDF.
  • Compare options: January 2027 calls at other institutes close around the same time. Use our Find a supervisor page to shortlist guides.
