What AcSIR admission for January 2027 gives you
AcSIR is an institution of national importance set up by an Act of Parliament. It does not have a campus of its own. It awards the degree, and the research happens inside the national laboratories. So you apply to AcSIR and you work at a lab such as CSIR-NCL in Pune, CSIR-CCMB in Hyderabad, CSIR-NPL in Delhi or an ICMR institute.
That structure is the thing worth understanding before you apply. The laboratory you join sets your day-to-day life. Choose the lab and the group first, then apply.
Programmes on offer
- PhD (Science): Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, and Mathematical and Information Sciences
- PhD (Medical Research): run at ICMR and allied institutes
- PhD (Engineering)
- IDDP: an Integrated Dual Degree Programme that awards an MTech and a PhD in Engineering
Eligibility
- For PhD (Science): a two-year or four-semester master’s in science or equivalent, after a three-year or six-semester bachelor’s in science or equivalent, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or an equivalent grade
- Or a four-year or eight-semester bachelor’s in science or engineering or equivalent, with at least 75% marks in aggregate or an equivalent grade
- Reservation of seats follows Government of India rules
- Each stream and each institute sets further conditions, including which national fellowship or test it accepts. Read the eligibility document on the AcSIR admissions page for your stream
Fellowships
The admission notice points to CSIR GATE and GPAT Junior Research Fellowships at CSIR institutes for IDDP and PhD candidates. Candidates holding their own national fellowship, such as CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, ICMR-JRF, DBT-JRF or DST-INSPIRE, bring it with them. The notice also mentions joint PhD programmes in cotutelle mode with international universities, which lets a scholar spend part of the degree abroad.
How to apply
Applications are online, through the AcSIR portal. Pick your programme, your stream and the institute where you want to work. The last date is 31 October 2026. Check the admission calendar on the AcSIR site for the test and interview dates after the deadline, because each institute runs its own selection.

How to prepare for this application
- Choose the laboratory first. AcSIR awards the PhD but a CSIR, ICMR or DST institute hosts it. The lab decides your topic, your supervisor and your city.
- Read the stream-wise eligibility document. Biological, Chemical, Physical, Agricultural and Mathematical streams do not share the same bar.
- Know which fellowship you are coming in with. CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, ICMR-JRF, DBT-JRF, GATE and GPAT routes are treated differently.
- Write to a scientist at the institute. A group that wants you matters more than the form, and CSIR lab web pages list staff and their work.
- Check the IDDP route if you want an MTech too. It awards both degrees and is easy to overlook in the notice.
