The project

The laboratory is growing its team in integrated photonics for the generation of high-quality electronic signals at frequencies beyond 100 GHz. The project is a Swiss-French collaboration with IEMN Lille.

High-end microwave instrumentation sits at the core of communications, computing, metrology and sensing. Generating clean signals above 100 GHz is hard with electronics alone, which is why photonic approaches matter: an optical source with very low noise can be converted down to a microwave tone that electronics cannot match. Adding spintronics to that gives another route to conversion and control.

What you need

  • A master’s degree in physics, electrical engineering, materials science or a related field
  • Interest in photonics, microwave engineering or spintronics, and a willingness to work across all three
  • Read the official advertisement for the full requirements

Pay and conditions

EPFL pays doctoral assistants and postdoctoral researchers on published Swiss federal scales, which are among the higher ones in Europe. This advertisement states no figure, so check the scale for your grade and the cost of living in Lausanne before you decide.

How to apply

How to prepare for this application

  • This sits between three fields. Say which of photonics, microwave engineering and spintronics you bring, and which you want to learn.
  • Above 100 GHz is the point. Any millimetre-wave or terahertz measurement experience is worth naming.
  • EPFL works in English. Research and teaching at this level run in English, so French is useful but rarely required.
  • Doctoral candidates apply twice. A lab offer at EPFL is normally followed by admission to a doctoral programme, so check the programme's own requirements too.
