Job Description
Chalmers University of Technology has a fully funded PhD position in machine learning for quantum error correction. You will use ML to make decoders for quantum computers faster and more scalable. The post is part of QuBriC, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network on error correction.
At a glance
- Position: Doctoral student, 4 years (Chalmers REF 2026-0448)
- Where: Department of Electrical Engineering, Chalmers, Gothenburg, Sweden
- Pay: About SEK 35,725 a month before tax, as an indicative starting salary
- Start: Early 2027
- Contact: Christian Häger, Associate Professor
- Apply: 30 November 2026
What the machine learning for quantum error correction PhD covers
- ML decoders for surface codes and quantum LDPC codes
- Algorithms that mix machine learning, coding theory and message-passing decoders
- Data-driven discovery of new decoding strategies or code structures
- Joint design of codes and decoders for realistic noise and hardware limits
- How ML decoders generalise across code sizes, noise models and hardware
- Research visits to Duke University and IQM Quantum Computers, and QuBriC training schools
- Up to 20% teaching and department duties
Why this role matters
Quantum computers need error correction to run useful programs, and the decoder must keep up in real time. That is a hard speed and hardware problem. Machine learning is one of the most promising ways to solve it. This post puts you inside a European network of 16 universities and 7 companies working on the same goal.
What Chalmers is looking for
- A master’s (120 credits) or magister (60 credits) in electrical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, physics or a close field; for degrees from outside Sweden, a 4-year bachelor’s is accepted
- Strong grades in at least one of coding or information theory, digital communications, quantum information or quantum computing
- Strong maths and programming skills (Python, Matlab or similar)
- Good English; Swedish is not required
- MSCA rules: you must not already hold a PhD, and you must not have lived or worked mainly in Sweden for more than 12 of the 36 months before recruitment
Nice to have
- Deep learning and probabilistic machine learning
- Optimisation and message-passing algorithms
- Research experience, publications or teaching
Pay and location
Chalmers gives an indicative starting salary of about SEK 35,725 a month before tax. The post is fully funded for four years, and up to 20% teaching can extend it to five. There are no tuition fees, and Chalmers offers relocation support. You need a residence permit by the start date, and the job is on site in Gothenburg.
How to apply
Apply through the official Chalmers page. The closing date is 30 November 2026. Upload PDFs in English: a CV named CV_Surname_20260450.pdf with two references, a 1–2 page letter named Letter_Surname_20260450.pdf, your bachelor’s and/or master’s thesis, transcripts and degree certificates, and any English test. Note the file names use 20260450, the list number, while the ad’s reference is REF 2026-0448. Chalmers does not accept email applications.

How to prepare for this application
- Show one project where you coded a decoder, a neural network or a simulation, and explain your choices
- Read up on surface codes and minimum-weight matching decoders, and on recent neural-network decoders
- Check the MSCA mobility rule against your last three years before you apply
- Use the exact file names the ad asks for; the portal takes PDFs only
- In the letter, say which of the listed directions you would start with and why
