The project

The Hybrid Photonics Laboratory works in integrated photonics, and this project builds fully integrated microcombs for atomic clocks. It is part of a European consortium with partners in the UK and Germany, funded through the QUANTERA network.

Atomic clocks give precise timing wherever absolute time has to be known accurately, and they work from ultraprecise transitions in atoms. An optical frequency comb is what connects those optical transitions to a countable microwave signal. Putting the comb on a chip is what turns a laboratory clock into something that could sit in an instrument, a satellite or a network node.

What you need

  • A master’s degree in physics, electrical engineering, photonics or a related field
  • Interest in integrated photonics, nonlinear optics and precision measurement
  • Read the official advertisement for the full requirements

Pay and conditions

EPFL pays doctoral assistants and postdoctoral researchers on published Swiss federal scales, which are among the higher ones in Europe. This advertisement states no figure, so check the scale for your grade and the cost of living in Lausanne before you decide.

How to apply

How to prepare for this application

  • Nonlinear optics is the core. Soliton microcombs, dispersion engineering and Kerr nonlinearity are the vocabulary to know.
  • Cleanroom experience helps. Integrated photonics means fabrication as well as measurement.
  • EPFL works in English. Research and teaching at this level run in English, so French is useful but rarely required.
  • Doctoral candidates apply twice. A lab offer at EPFL is normally followed by admission to a doctoral programme, so check the programme's own requirements too.
