Job Description

TU Delft has a PhD position in analog chip design for thermal sensors. You will design next-generation thermal sensors, such as flow sensors and temperature sensors, built on sigma-delta modulators. Only candidates with proven chip design experience will be considered.

At a glance

  • Position: PhD candidate, 4 years
  • Where: Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS), TU Delft, Netherlands
  • Pay: €3,204 to €4,051 gross a month (year 1 to year 4), plus 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus
  • Supervisor: Prof. Kofi Makinwa (applications are addressed to him)
  • Apply: 22 October 2026

What the sigma-delta sensor PhD works on

  • Design of thermal sensors, such as flow and temperature sensors, based on sigma-delta modulators
  • Sensor physics, especially heat transfer
  • Analog circuit design for these sensors
  • Experimental and simulation-based research, done independently
  • Writing and presenting the results

Why this role matters

Sigma-delta modulators turn a slow analog signal into a precise digital one, and they are the heart of many sensor chips. Putting the sensor and the converter together on one chip can make it smaller, cheaper and more accurate. This PhD suits someone who has already designed chips and wants to go deep into smart sensors.

What TU Delft is looking for

  • An MSc in Electrical Engineering
  • Proven chip design experience, for example an IEEE conference or journal paper, or industry chip design work
  • Strong knowledge of analog and sensor-based systems, and a solid grasp of sensor physics, especially heat transfer
  • The ability to run experimental and simulation-based research on your own
  • Good English, written and spoken, and clear writing and presenting

Pay and location

Pay follows the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities: €3,204 gross a month in the first year, rising to €4,051 in the fourth, for a full-time 38-hour week. There is an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus. The four years come as a 1.5-year contract with a go/no-go review within 15 months, then a 2.5-year contract. TU Delft runs a knowledge-security risk assessment in the final stage of selection.

How to apply

Apply through the official TU Delft page. The closing date is 22 October 2026. Apply online with a CV and a motivation letter, addressed to Kofi Makinwa. Email and post applications are not processed.

How to prepare for this application

  • Lead with your chip design record: tape-outs, measured results and any IEEE paper
  • Revise sigma-delta basics: oversampling, noise shaping, loop order and stability
  • Learn how thermal sensors work: heat transfer, thermal diffusivity and how flow changes heat loss
  • Bring a short summary of one analog block you designed, with its specifications and measured results
  • Check TU Delft's Graduate School English requirements before you apply
