Job Description
These PhD positions in quantum networks are in the Taminiau Lab at QuTech, TU Delft. You will build nanophotonic devices in silicon carbide with spin defects, and use them to link qubits with light. There are several places. Apply by 15 December 2026.
At a glance
- Position: PhD candidate, several positions (ID job 3973)
- Group: Taminiau Lab, QuTech, Delft University of Technology
- Where: Delft, Netherlands
- Pay: €3,204 a month in year 1, rising to €4,051 in year 4, plus 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus
- Duration: 4 years (a 1.5-year contract, then 2.5 years after a progress check)
- Apply: 15 December 2026
About the silicon-carbide quantum network PhD project
- Design and fabricate nanophotonic devices in silicon carbide (SiC) that hold spin defects
- Build fast optical entanglement links between spin qubits
- Work on high-fidelity control of spin qubits
- Run quantum optics experiments that show small but scalable quantum networks
- Aim at uses in distributed quantum computing, quantum simulation and quantum communication
Why this role matters
A quantum internet needs qubits that talk to each other through light. QuTech made some of the first such links. Silicon carbide adds chip-scale fabrication, so this PhD sits where research meets real devices.
What QuTech is looking for
- An MSc in (applied) physics, quantum technologies, materials science or a related field
- Strong motivation for nanofabrication and characterisation of quantum devices for quantum networks
- English good enough to meet the TU Delft Graduate School admission rules
Nice to have
- Experience in device fabrication, nanophotonics or experimental quantum physics, for example with spins or superconducting systems. The ad says this is appreciated but not essential
Pay and location
Pay follows the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. It starts at €3,204 gross a month in year 1 and rises to €4,051 in year 4, for a full-time 38-hour week. You also get 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus. The first contract is 1.5 years, with a go/no-go assessment within 15 months. A 2.5-year contract follows if all goes well. TU Delft’s Coming to Delft Service helps with moving to the Netherlands.
How to apply
Apply through the official QuTech page. The closing date is 15 December 2026. Apply online only with a CV and a motivation letter addressed to Dr Tim Taminiau. Emailed applications are not processed. TU Delft runs a knowledge-security check in the final stage.

How to prepare for this application
- Read the group's papers: look up Tim Taminiau's work on spin qubits and nuclear-spin registers in diamond and SiC.
- Know colour centres: what divacancies and silicon vacancies in SiC are, and why their optical lines matter.
- Revise quantum optics: photon indistinguishability, Hong-Ou-Mandel interference and heralded entanglement.
- Show cleanroom interest: mention any lithography, etching or device work, even from a master's project.
- Write a sharp motivation letter: say why quantum networks, and what you can bring to fabrication or experiments.
About QuTech
QuTech is the quantum technology institute of Delft University of Technology and TNO, in the Netherlands. It works on scalable prototypes of a quantum computer and a quantum internet. PhD candidates are employed by TU Delft and enrolled in its Graduate School.
