Job Description

Lund University is hiring a postdoc in AI protein design in Sweden. You will design new proteins that build engineered biofilms, and test them in the lab. The project sits between computational design and synthetic biology. Apply by 31 October 2026.

At a glance

  • Position: Postdoc, ref. PA2026/2792, full time, 1 post
  • Lab: Saragovi lab, Faculty of Science
  • Where: Lund, Sweden
  • Pay: Monthly salary; the ad gives no figure
  • Duration: Up to 2 years; start 1 January 2027 or as agreed
  • Apply: 31 October 2026

What the Lund protein design postdoc will do

  • Research AI protein design, synthetic biology and biofilm engineering for programmable living materials
  • Build computational pipelines for de novo protein design
  • Run high-throughput screening and characterise designed proteins
  • Engineer microbes that make the designed biofilms
  • Teach for up to 20% of working time, with three weeks of teaching training
  • Help supervise degree projects and PhD students, and help seek external funding

Why this role matters

Living materials are a new field. Cells build the material and can repair it. Designing the proteins that hold such materials together needs both AI tools and bench skills. The lab already has a funded spin-out company, so the work has a path to use.

What Lund University is looking for

  • A PhD, or an equivalent international degree, completed no more than three years before the employment decision. The ad allows an earlier PhD in special cases
  • A PhD or equal research experience in a field such as protein design, computational biology, structural biology, synthetic biology, biotechnology, bioengineering, microbiology or molecular biology
  • Experience in at least one of: computational or de novo protein design, synthetic biology, microbial or yeast engineering, biofilm engineering, or high-throughput screening
  • Very good spoken and written English

Nice to have

  • Experience in two or more of the areas above
  • AI protein design: structure prediction, sequence design or generative design
  • Producing and characterising designed proteins; genetic engineering of bacteria or yeast
  • Automation and design-build-test-learn work
  • A strong publication record and work with outside partners

Pay and location

The ad states a monthly salary but gives no figure. The post is full time and fixed term, for up to two years under Lund’s postdoc agreement. It starts on 1 January 2027 or as agreed.

How to apply

Apply through the official Lund University page. The closing date is 31 October 2026. Apply in English through Lund’s Varbi portal. Put everything in one PDF: a CV with publications, up to three pages on past research and future interests, contacts for two referees, and your PhD certificate.

How to prepare for this application

  • Show both sides. Pair a design method you used with a protein you made and tested.
  • Name the tools. AlphaFold, RFdiffusion, ProteinMPNN or Rosetta: say what you used and why.
  • Use the three pages well. Link your past work to biofilms and programmable materials.
  • Mind the three-year rule. Check your PhD date against it before you apply.
  • Prepare for teaching. Up to a fifth of the job is teaching, so note any courses you gave.
