Job Description
This postdoc in nonlinear photonics at Chalmers develops compact optical parametric amplifiers and oscillators. You will work in the nanofabrication lab and optics labs of the Photonics Laboratory in Gothenburg. Apply by 30 November 2026.
At a glance
- Position: Postdoc, 2 years, with a possible 1-year extension
- Where: Photonics Laboratory, Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience, Chalmers, Gothenburg, Sweden
- Contact: Peter Andrekson
- Pay: Not stated in the ad
- Reference: REF 2026-0484
- Apply: 30 November 2026
About the optical parametric amplifier postdoc
- Develop and test new concepts for compact optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs) and oscillators (OPOs)
- Work hands-on in the nanofabrication lab and in other labs
- Help shape the research direction with colleagues
- Aim at next-generation laser sources for spectroscopy, quantum technology and imaging
- Take part in teaching, supervision and joint projects in the department
The Photonics Laboratory works on optoelectronic devices, ultrafast optics and fibre-optic communication. Its work runs from long-haul transmission to datacentre links.
Why this role matters
Parametric amplifiers can boost weak light with almost no added noise. Chip-size versions could change sensing and quantum optics. This post gives a young postdoc room to shape the research.
What Chalmers is looking for
- A PhD in photonics, optics, physics, electrical engineering or a similar field, awarded no more than 3 years before the application deadline
- Experience making photonic devices in a cleanroom, or experiments on nonlinear optical parametric devices, or both
- A record of research and teaching: papers, talks and teaching experience
- Strong written and spoken English
Pay and location
The ad does not state pay. The job is full time and temporary, for two years, with a possible one-year extension. You must be physically present for the whole job. You need a valid residence permit by the start date, or the offer may be withdrawn. Chalmers may run a background check.
How to apply
Apply through the official Chalmers page. The closing date is 30 November 2026. Apply online in English, with PDF files: a full CV with publications and teaching, and a personal letter. Referees are asked for after the interview. Applications by email are not considered. The ad says applications are reviewed periodically, so apply early.

How to prepare for this application
- Revise parametric gain: phase matching, chi(2) and chi(3) processes, and phase-sensitive amplification.
- Know the hardware: thin-film lithium niobate, silicon nitride and periodically poled waveguides.
- Show cleanroom work: list the lithography, etching and loss figures you achieved on your own devices.
- Plan the personal letter: introduce yourself, sum up your research results and set out your future goals.
- Check the 3-year rule: your PhD must date from 30 November 2023 or later.
