Job Description

TU Delft is hiring a postdoc on ocean and sea ice interactions, building the fine-scale physics that global climate models currently miss. Applications close on 10 November 2026.

The project

Both hemispheres have lost substantial sea ice over recent decades, and existing climate models cannot forecast those changes accurately. Part of the reason is how poorly they represent the interactions between ocean and sea ice at sub-grid scales.

This project improves the physical understanding of those fine-scale processes, including the melting and breakage of sea ice, using a framework that couples an ocean Large Eddy Simulation with a Discrete Element Model of sea ice. The simulation results are validated against in-situ and remote sensing data from both Arctic and Antarctic sea ice regions.

From that understanding, you would develop parameterisations that emulate the physics for use in coarser global climate models. That is the step that turns a detailed local simulation into something that improves a climate projection.

What you need

  • A PhD in physical oceanography, climate science, fluid mechanics or a related field
  • Experience with large eddy simulation, discrete element modelling or comparable numerical work
  • Read the official advertisement for the full requirements

Pay and conditions

Salary and benefits follow the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The advertisement states no figure of its own, so check the scale for your grade. TU Delft adds a pension scheme, and the usual Dutch holiday and end-of-year allowances.

How to apply

Apply through the application button on the TU Delft job page and upload the documents it asks for. The advertisement says to apply no later than 10 November 2026.

How to prepare for this application

  • Two model families meet here. Ocean LES and DEM sea ice. Say which you know and how you would couple them.
  • Parameterisation is the deliverable. The project succeeds when a global model gets better, so show you can make that jump.
  • Apply through the button on the job page. TU Delft only takes applications through its own system.
  • Check the Dutch 30% ruling. If you move to the Netherlands for this post you may qualify for a tax advantage that changes your take-home pay noticeably.
