Job Description

Prof. Marcy Zenobi-Wong’s Tissue Engineering and Biofabrication Laboratory at ETH Zurich is hiring a postdoctoral optical systems and photonics engineer. The lab uses light-based 3D bioprinting to build tissues, and this postdoc will design and build light-delivery systems that shape light fields to control hydrogel architecture, and study how structured light interacts with photosensitive polymers, working with bioengineers, chemists and biologists. The position is funded for 18 months.

At a glance

  • Position: Postdoc, 100%, 1.5 years
  • Lab: Tissue Engineering and Biofabrication, Department of Health Sciences and Technology
  • Contact: Prof. Marcy Zenobi-Wong, marcy.zenobi@hest.ethz.ch (questions only)
  • Where: Zurich
  • Apply: open until filled (re-checked 13 October 2026)

About the optical systems postdoc

  • Design, simulate and build custom optical setups and beam-shaping trains
  • Characterise how structured light fields interact with photosensitive polymers
  • Turn photonic ideas into engineered scaffolds for regenerative medicine with an interdisciplinary team

About the lab

The Tissue Engineering and Biofabrication Laboratory sits in ETH’s Department of Health Sciences and Technology and the Institute for Biomechanics, and bridges biomedical engineering, materials science and biology. ETH accepts applications only through its online portal, and the advert notes that pre-selection is done by recruiters, not by AI.

What ETH Zurich is looking for

  • A PhD in optical engineering, photonics, applied physics or electrical engineering with an optics focus
  • Hands-on laser beam shaping and phase modulation
  • Optical modelling software in Python, MATLAB or similar
  • Strong publications for your career stage
  • Excellent English

Nice to have

  • Multi-photon polymerisation
  • Metalenses or metasurfaces
  • Adaptive optics
  • Non-diffracting beam design

Pay and location

ETH Zurich does not state the salary in this advert; the post is funded for 1.5 years, full time in Zurich, with ETH staff benefits.
