The project

The energy transition is under way and silicon photovoltaic capacity is growing fast. Every module installed today becomes waste eventually, and the industry is only beginning to work out how to recover the silicon, silver, glass and polymers in a way that makes economic sense.

This position joins the silicon photovoltaics activities in Neuchâtel, working on photovoltaic recycling. It is a good moment for the topic: the first large wave of modules installed in the 2010s is approaching end of life, and the methods developed now are the ones the industry will use.

What you need

  • A PhD in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, photovoltaics or a related field
  • Interest in process development and the practical economics of recycling
  • Read the official advertisement for the full requirements

Pay and conditions

EPFL pays doctoral assistants and postdoctoral researchers on published Swiss federal scales, which are among the higher ones in Europe. This advertisement states no figure, so check the scale for your grade and the cost of living in Neuchâtel before you decide.

How to prepare for this application

  • This is applied work with an industry endpoint. Process yield and cost matter as much as the chemistry.
  • PV-Lab is a well-known silicon group. Read their recent papers on module technology before you write.
  • EPFL works in English. Research and teaching at this level run in English, so French is useful but rarely required.
  • Doctoral candidates apply twice. A lab offer at EPFL is normally followed by admission to a doctoral programme, so check the programme's own requirements too.
