The project
Technologies increasingly shape the moral landscape of our societies. Approaches such as Design for Values and Value Sensitive Design try to build moral values like privacy, justice and sustainability into the design process itself.
Design for Values has many methods for finding out what people currently value. It offers almost no guidance on which values are the right ones to design for. That gap means designers risk baking harmful or mistaken values into technologies everyone then lives with.
This project, Techno-Moral Experience and the Foundations of Design for Values, builds a moral epistemology for Design for Values. Its guiding idea is that our emotional and perceptual encounters with morally significant situations, our moral experiences, are central to justified moral judgement. What you need
- A PhD in philosophy, with strength in epistemology, ethics or the philosophy of technology
- An interest in working alongside designers and engineers, since the project is aimed at design practice
