Job Description

These postdoc positions in condensed matter physics are in the Condensed Matter Physics Experiment (CMPE) group at the Institute of Physics (IOP), Bhubaneswar. Topics include topological and correlated quantum materials, neuromorphic devices, 2D materials and ion-implanted diamond. Apply by email by 31 October 2026.

At a glance

  • Posts: Postdoctoral / Research Associate, several posts
  • Where: Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar, Odisha (a DAE institute)
  • Pay: ₹58,000 to ₹67,000 a month by experience, + ₹60,000 a year contingency
  • Duration: 1 year, extendable to a second and possibly a third year
  • Apply by: 31 October 2026, by email

The posts are under the DAE project “Research and development on cutting-edge topics in theoretical and experimental physics” at IOP (UID: NO. RIO 4004). You can apply for one or more of four research topics.

The four research topics

  • Topic 1, novel electronic phases: correlated electrons, topological matter, 2D magnetism, quantum transport and spin-orbit effects in thin films and heterostructures
  • Topic 2, neuromorphic devices: ferroelectric and memristive devices that mimic synapses; thin-film growth, microfabrication and electrical testing
  • Topic 3, functional materials: nanomaterials, 2D materials, correlated systems, halide perovskites, ferroelectrics and thermoelectrics
  • Topic 4, ion-implanted wide band-gap materials: defect engineering in diamond and oxide films, and its effect on electrical and optical properties

Topic 2 asks for experience with RRAM or artificial synapses, sputtering or PLD, lithography, AFM and Raman, and pulsed electrical tests. Topic 4 asks for experience with ion beams or thin-film growth.

Why this role matters

Quantum materials and defect-engineered diamond feed directly into future quantum devices and sensors. IOP pays DAE postdoc rates with a contingency grant, and lets you pick from four topics. That flexibility is rare in Indian postdoc ads.

Eligibility

  • You may apply if you have completed your PhD or submitted your thesis
  • You must show the PhD degree or provisional certificate before joining
  • Peer-reviewed papers in your chosen topic help your case
  • No age limit is stated in the advertisement

Selection is by interview and/or a presentation of your research work.

Pay and duration

  • ₹58,000 a month right after the PhD
  • ₹61,000 a month with one year of postdoc experience
  • ₹67,000 a month with two or more years of postdoc experience
  • Plus a contingency grant of ₹60,000 a year
  • Campus housing if available; otherwise HRA as per institute rules
  • First appointment for 1 year; a second year after review, and possibly a third

How to apply

Email cmpe@iopb.res.in with: your CV (with the status of your PhD), a list of publications, a research statement of at most 2 pages, and a cover letter that names the research topic number(s). Use the subject line “CMPE Postdoctoral/Research Associate – [Research Topic-Number(s)]”. Ask at least two referees to email their letters directly to the same address by the deadline. See the IOP job notice.

Key dates

  • Last date: 31 October 2026 (letters of reference by the same date)

Please read the official IOP Bhubaneswar advertisement before applying, and browse more postdoc jobs on ResearchJobs.in.

How to prepare for this application

  • Pick the topic that fits your PhD best and say why in the first lines of your cover letter
  • Keep the research statement to two pages: one past result, one plan for IOP
  • Contact your referees now; their letters must arrive by 31 October
  • Prepare a 15-minute talk on your thesis work in case you are asked to present
  • Read recent CMPE group papers so you can link your skills to their tools
