Job Description

IIT Roorkee’s Department of Chemical Engineering is inviting applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in chemical engineering on how particle shape affects mixing in pneumatic conveying systems, under the mentorship of Prof. Anshu Anand.

At a glance

  • Post: Postdoctoral Fellow (Institute PDF)
  • Where: Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Roorkee, Uttarakhand
  • Mentor: Prof. Anshu Anand
  • Pay: ₹80,000 a month plus HRA, and ₹50,000 a year contingency
  • Duration: Two years
  • Apply by: 15 October 2026, 5:00 pm, by email

The advertisement is IITR/ChED/I-PDF/2026/AA, dated 14 September 2026. The project is titled “Shape-Dependent Mixing Characterization of Non-Spherical Particles in Pneumatic Conveying Systems with Vertically Up-Transporting Bends”. Pneumatic conveying moves powders and granules through pipes with air, and bends are where flow and mixing change most.

About the postdoc in particle mixing

  • Characterise how non-spherical particles mix in pneumatic conveying lines that carry material upward through bends
  • Work out how particle shape changes that mixing behaviour
  • Aim for high-impact publications from the project
  • Mentor undergraduate and postgraduate students, act as a teaching assistant and take on other academic tasks the mentor assigns

Why this role matters

Pneumatic conveying is used across the cement, pharmaceutical, food, mining and power industries, and real particles are rarely spheres. Understanding how shape changes mixing in bends feeds directly into better equipment design, so this fellowship gives a particle-technology researcher both publishable science and industry-relevant expertise, with a well-paid two-year IIT postdoc.

Eligibility

  • A PhD in chemical engineering or a relevant allied discipline from a premier, recognised national or international institute
  • At least three first-author research papers in SCI-indexed international journals from the PhD
  • Strong academic credentials and the soft skills to mentor laboratory students
  • Candidates who have recently submitted their thesis may apply, but must show proof of the PhD award at interview
  • PhD holders from IIT Roorkee are not eligible

Only candidates screened on their credentials are invited to interview, and the selected fellow is expected to join as soon as the offer letter is issued. The position is purely temporary.

Pay and duration

  • ₹80,000 a month (consolidated) plus HRA as applicable
  • Contingency grant of ₹50,000 a year
  • Duration: two years; either side may end the fellowship with one month’s notice
  • 2.5 days of leave per completed month, not carried beyond a calendar year

How to apply

Email a covering letter, a detailed CV and a list of publications, combined into a single PDF, to Prof. Anshu Anand at anshu.anand@ch.iitr.ac.in. Mention the advertisement number and date and the title of the position clearly.

Key dates

  • Advertisement dated 14 September 2026
  • Last date: 15 October 2026, 5:00 pm; late applications are not considered

How to prepare for this application

  • Count your papers: the ad asks for three first-author SCI papers from the PhD, so list them first.
  • Bring your method: whether you use DEM, CFD-DEM or experiments (PIV, high-speed imaging, tracer methods), say how you would apply it to bends.
  • Know shape descriptors: sphericity, aspect ratio and how non-spherical particles are modelled (multi-sphere, superquadrics, polyhedra).
  • Revise mixing indices: be ready to compare the Lacey index and other segregation measures.
  • Look up the mentor: read recent papers from the group before the interview, and see our postdoc listings.

About IIT Roorkee

IIT Roorkee in Uttarakhand traces its roots to the Roorkee college founded in 1847, later the Thomason College of Civil Engineering. It became India's first technical university as the University of Roorkee in 1948 and was converted into an Indian Institute of Technology in 2001. Postdoctoral fellows at IIT Roorkee are registered as students, which gives them access to the library, computer centre and hospital.
