About the work

This post is a period of clinical postdoctoral research focused on developing and validating new treatments and biomarkers for mitochondrial disorders, as part of a new national rare disease centre funded by LifeArc and Muscular Dystrophy UK.

It is aimed specifically at practising clinicians who already hold a PhD and relevant specialty training, with extensive prior clinical and research experience in neuromuscular or neurogenetic conditions. That is a narrow specification, and the advertisement states it plainly.

The Cambridge Clinical Mitochondrial Research Group, MitoCAMB, studies the genetic basis, clinical presentation and molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial diseases and other rare inherited neurodegenerative and neuromuscular disorders. The group sits within the Department of Clinical Neurosciences and the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit.

What you need

  • A practising clinician with a PhD and relevant specialty training
  • Extensive prior clinical and research experience with neuromuscular or neurogenetic conditions
  • Read the official advertisement for the full person specification

Pay

The advertised range is £40,190 to £76,582 a year. This is a fixed-term post.

How to prepare for this application

  • This post is for clinicians only. A PhD alone is not enough; specialty training is required.
  • Rare disease work needs patience. Cohorts are small and biomarker validation is slow; say you understand that.
  • Quote the reference, RR51252. Cambridge asks for it on the form and in every email about the post.
  • Check your right to work in the UK. Every Cambridge advert carries this condition, and it is the usual reason an overseas application stalls.
