Read the official ORNL advertisement before you apply.
The work
The Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Cycle Analysis Group works with modelling and simulation for lattice physics, reactor core, spent fuel and fuel cycle applications. This post leads development and analysis using SCALE, the Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications, or both, in collaboration with industry, other national laboratories and university researchers.
SCALE and VERA are among the most widely used reactor analysis tools in the world, and ORNL is where they are built. Working on them means your output reaches far beyond the laboratory: utilities, regulators and vendors all run these codes.
ORNL describes itself as the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, with world-leading nuclear and radiological capability behind this group.
What you need
- A PhD in nuclear engineering, physics or a closely related field
- Reactor physics and fuel cycle modelling, ideally with SCALE or VERA
- Read the official advertisement for the full qualifications
Pay and conditions
ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.
How to apply
Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 17151. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. Read the posting’s own wording before you spend time on an application from outside the US.

How to prepare for this application
- SCALE and VERA are named explicitly. Any hands-on use is the strongest thing on your application.
- The work reaches industry and regulators. Say if you have worked to that standard of verification.
- Quote the requisition ID, 17151. ORNL tracks applications by it.
- Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.
