Job Description

The University of Edinburgh is hiring a postdoc in epigenetic regulation of stem cells in Prof. Andrew Jackson’s lab. You will study how DNA methylation drives epigenetic ageing and body size in mammals. The ERC-funded post pays £41,064 to £48,822 a year for three years.

At a glance

  • Position: Postdoctoral Research Associate, full time, 3 years (job 14961)
  • Where: Institute of Genetics and Cancer, Western General campus, Edinburgh, UK
  • Pay: £41,064 to £48,822 a year (grade UE07)
  • Funding: ERC Advanced Grant
  • Lab: Prof. Andrew Jackson FRS
  • Apply: 29 October 2026, 11:59 pm UK time

What the epigenetic ageing postdoc involves

  • Study the mechanisms that control how many cells a tissue has, and how this leads to epigenetic ageing
  • Build on the lab’s discovery of a new accelerated-ageing syndrome linking a cell clock with ageing and human size
  • Use stem-cell culture, targeted epigenome engineering, CRISPR barcoding and mouse models
  • Find out how DNA methylation at key lineage genes changes stem-cell output and tissue repair
  • Help identify pathways that therapies could target

Why this role matters

Epigenetic clocks are now used to measure ageing, but what drives them is still unclear. This lab has found a human syndrome that links the clock to ageing and size. Working on it puts you at the front of ageing biology, with modern tools that transfer well to other fields.

What Edinburgh is looking for

  • An enthusiastic cell biologist, as the advert puts it
  • The detailed essential and desirable criteria are in the full job description linked from the advert

Pay and location

The salary is £41,064 to £48,822 a year on grade UE07, pro rata if part time. The post is full time (35 hours a week) and fixed term for three years. Part-time or flexible patterns are possible. You must show UK right to work before you start. The advert says the university may be able to sponsor international workers for this role, depending on your case. Part-time working may affect sponsorship.
