About the work

The project develops fundamental theory and methods that let machine learning systems be deployed in a trustworthy way. It spans human-AI interaction, fairness, transparency, privacy and other approaches to optimising deployed AI systems as human-machine teams.

You would develop and evaluate methods at the frontier of trustworthy AI, validate them on real-world problems in partnership with domain experts and stakeholders, and publish and present at leading venues in machine learning such as NeurIPS, ICML and ICLR, in AI ethics and society such as FAccT and AIES, and in policy settings.

Funding is available for two years. CFI is a highly interdisciplinary centre at Cambridge addressing the challenges and opportunities of artificial intelligence, with close links to industry.

What you need

  • A PhD in computer science, information engineering, statistics, machine learning or a closely related field, completed or near completion
  • Expertise in one or more areas of trustworthy AI: human-AI interaction, fairness, transparency and interpretability, privacy, or robustness
  • A strong understanding of machine learning methods, with excellent mathematical and programming skills

Pay

The advertised range is £37,694 to £46,049 a year. This is a fixed-term post.

How to prepare for this application

  • Pick your corner of trustworthy AI. Fairness, interpretability, privacy and robustness are different literatures; depth in one beats a tour of all.
  • Publication venue matters here. The advert names NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, FAccT and AIES, so list what you have at those.
  • Real-world validation is part of the job. Mention any work done with domain experts or deployed systems.
  • Quote the reference, GO51218. Cambridge asks for it on the form and in every email about the post.
  • Line up your referees early. Cambridge contacts them during selection, so tell them before you apply.
  • Check your right to work in the UK. Every Cambridge advert carries this condition, and it is the usual reason an overseas application stalls.
