Job Description

RIKEN is hiring two postdoctoral researchers in silicon quantum computing at its Center for Emergent Matter Science. You will test silicon quantum-dot qubits and multi-qubit devices. The work is part of Japan’s Moonshot programme for a scalable silicon quantum computer. Pay starts at 520,000 yen a month or more.

At a glance

  • Position: Postdoctoral Researcher, 2 posts (call 26-1447)
  • Where: Quantum Functional System Research Group, RIKEN CEMS, Wako, Saitama, Japan
  • Group director: Seigo Tarucha
  • Pay: 520,000 yen a month or more at hiring (about 540,000 yen for someone 3 years past the PhD)
  • Contract: One year, renewable on review, up to 31 March 2029
  • Apply: open until filled (re-checked 15 November 2026)

What the silicon qubit postdocs will work on

  • Characterise silicon qubit devices and multi-qubit systems
  • Run high-fidelity quantum operations on spin qubits in silicon quantum dots
  • Work on the principles and technology for scalable quantum computing
  • Study coherence, spin entanglement and quantum state control in semiconductor quantum dots
  • Contribute to Moonshot R&D Programme Goal 6, “Development of scalable silicon quantum computer technology”

Why this role matters

Silicon spin qubits can be made with the same tools as ordinary chips. That makes them a strong route to large quantum computers. The Tarucha group is one of the best known in the field. Two years here would give you deep hands-on skills that quantum hardware companies want.

What RIKEN is looking for

  • A doctorate in an experimental field such as semiconductor physics, quantum transport, electrical engineering or quantum information. You may apply if you will have it before you start
  • RIKEN defines a postdoc as someone whose doctorate is less than five years old
  • Hands-on expertise in semiconductor quantum devices or semiconductor quantum information
  • Work on site at Wako; remote working is not offered in principle

Pay and location

Monthly salary plus discretionary work allowance is 520,000 yen or more at hiring. The ad gives about 540,000 yen a month for someone three years past the doctorate. RIKEN also pays commuting and housing allowances and social insurance, and you may apply for KAKENHI grants. The contract is for one year, renewable after review, up to 31 March 2029 at most. The Wako campus has on-site daycare.

How to apply

Apply through the official RIKEN job posting. RIKEN’s posting does not give a closing date, so the role is open until filled; ResearchJobs.in will re-check this listing on 15 November 2026. Put a CV with “26-1447” in the open-call field, a list of publications, copies of up to five main papers, a summary of achievements with a research plan (about five A4 pages) and a signed personal-data consent form into one ZIP file named after you. Upload it to the Box link on the RIKEN page, then email the file name to the contact given there. Ask one referee, usually your current supervisor, to upload a letter directly. Check the posting for location and work-authorisation details before you apply.

How to prepare for this application

  • Show your cryogenic measurement experience: fridges, RF lines, and the devices you measured
  • Explain one qubit metric you improved, such as T2 or gate fidelity, and how
  • Read the group's recent papers on silicon spin qubits and multi-qubit control
  • Keep the five-page summary focused on what you would do at RIKEN
  • Brief your referee early; the letter goes in separately

About RIKEN
