Job Description

This biomedical optics research job at AIIMS New Delhi is one Project Research Scientist-I (Non-Medical) post on an ICMR-funded project to develop a low-cost multimodal optical imaging “microscopic device” for the early diagnosis of oral cancer, in the Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology at the Centre for Dental Education and Research (project code I-1703).

At a glance

  • Position: Project Research Scientist-I (Non-Medical), 01 post
  • Where: Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology, CDER, AIIMS, New Delhi
  • Pay: Rs 56,000 a month plus 27% HRA as admissible
  • Duration: Not stated in the notice
  • Apply by: 4:00 pm on 4 October 2026

The project is supervised by Dr. Varun Surya of the Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology. The notice is dated 19 September 2026 and is open to Indian citizens. Salary and experience requirements follow ICMR guidelines.

Why this role matters

Oral cancer is among the most common cancers in India, and it is often found late because suspicious lesions are hard to judge by eye and biopsy is not always practical. A cheap device that reads tissue with fluorescence and microscopy could change who gets screened. For an optics or photonics researcher, this is a chance to build an instrument inside a clinical department, with the pathologists who will use it, rather than in a physics lab far from patients.

This is a non-medical post: it is meant for a physicist or optical engineer, not a clinician.

What the biomedical optics research post involves

  • Developing a low-cost multimodal optical imaging “microscopic device” for early oral cancer diagnosis
  • Work that draws on the desirable experience in the notice: building autofluorescence and fluorescence instruments, and microscopy and spectroscopy for oral cancer

The notice gives the project title and the desired experience rather than a list of duties.

Eligibility

  • Ph.D. in Physical Sciences with specialisation in photonics, fibre optics and medical optics
  • Or M.Tech. in Optics and Instrumentation with three years’ experience in optics, photonics and instrumentation
  • Or M.Sc. in Physics with four years’ experience in optics, photonics, fibre optics and instrumentation
  • Desirable: experience developing autofluorescence or fluorescence instruments, microscopy and spectroscopy in the field of oral cancer
  • Age: not more than 35 years on the last date for applications

Incomplete applications and those received after the closing date and time will not be considered. Shortlisted candidates are called for interview by email, no TA/DA is paid for attending, and all original documents must be brought to the interview. The competent authority’s decision on eligibility and selection is final.

Pay and duration

  • Rs 56,000 a month plus 27% HRA as admissible
  • Salary and experience requirements as per ICMR guidelines
  • One post; duration not stated

How to apply

Email your documents together with a detailed account of your research experience, as a single PDF file, to drvarunsuryamds@aiims.edu. You must also fill in the Google application form linked from the notice; both steps are required.

Key dates

  • Notice dated 19 September 2026
  • Last date for applications: 4:00 pm on 4 October 2026
  • Interview: shortlisted candidates are informed by email

How to prepare for this application

  • Send one clean PDF: the notice asks for all documents plus a detailed research-experience statement in a single file, and completing the Google form as well
  • In the research statement, list the optical instruments you have built or modified, the light sources and detectors used, and what you measured with them
  • Revise tissue autofluorescence: the main endogenous fluorophores (NADH, FAD, collagen), their excitation bands, and why their signals change in dysplasia
  • Think about cost: be ready to say how you would design a fluorescence or reflectance imager with LEDs, filters and a low-cost camera instead of a laboratory laser and spectrometer
  • Count your years of experience carefully if you apply with an M.Tech. or M.Sc.; the notice asks for three or four years respectively
