Job Description

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is hiring a Research Associate in grid modelling and electromagnetic transient simulation software. The call is open until filled.

At a glance

  • Post: Research Associate in Grid Modelling and EMT Simulation Software
  • Where: Grid Transients and Advanced Modeling Group, Electrification and Energy Infrastructure Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA
  • Requisition ID: 16570
  • Closing date: none given. ORNL reviews applications as they arrive, so the post is open until filled
  • Pay: the advertisement states no figure

Read the official ORNL advertisement before you apply.

The work

This post sits alongside the postdoctoral role on the same project, at a different grade. The advertisement lists one or more of: developing EMT simulation software; bulk power system electromagnetic transient simulations; high-fidelity dynamic and transient modelling of power electronics resources; exploring intelligence algorithms to make the simulations easier to use; and applying EMT simulation to different problems.

That fourth item is worth noticing. EMT simulation is notoriously fiddly to set up correctly, and work on making it usable is as valuable as work on making it faster.

The group supports the Department of Energy’s energy reliability mission, with research for the Office of Electricity, CESER, and Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation.

What you need

  • A degree in electrical or power systems engineering, or a closely related field
  • Software development for simulation, and an understanding of power system dynamics
  • The ability to work independently under general guidance, publish and present to sponsors
  • Read the official advertisement for the full qualifications

Pay and conditions

ORNL publishes no salary figure on this advertisement. It is a US Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory with more than 7,000 staff, and postdoctoral appointments there are normally fixed-term with the possibility of renewal. Ask about the term and the pay band at interview.

How to apply

Apply through the ORNL job page using the Apply button, quoting requisition 16570. The advertisement gives no closing date, so apply early. Most ORNL positions require the right to work in the United States, and some roles touching nuclear or export-controlled work carry citizenship conditions. Read the posting’s own wording before you spend time on an application from outside the US.

How to prepare for this application

  • This is the non-postdoctoral grade. A doctorate is not the entry point here, which makes it a route in for a strong engineer.
  • Usability is explicitly in scope. If you have made a hard simulation tool easier to drive, say so.
  • Quote the requisition ID, 16570. ORNL tracks applications by it.
  • Check the work-authorisation line on the posting. It is the usual reason an overseas application stalls at a national laboratory.

About Oak Ridge National Laboratory
