Job Description

IIT Roorkee’s Department of Physics is hiring a Research Associate for sodium-ion battery research on a project sponsored by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), New Delhi. The project, “Design and Development of Power Back Up of 1-5 kWh based on Sodium ion Cell operable at sub-Zero temperature for renewables”, is led by Prof. Yogesh Kumar Sharma.

About the sodium-ion battery project

Sodium-ion batteries are a promising lower-cost alternative to lithium-ion for storing renewable energy, but like other batteries their performance falls at low temperatures. This project aims to build 1–5 kWh power back-up units from sodium-ion cells that keep working below zero. The Research Associate (RA-III) will synthesise and characterise electrolytes designed for sub-zero temperatures and test them in sodium-ion batteries.

Eligibility

  • A PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Nanotechnology, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or equivalent
  • Research experience with energy storage devices, especially Li-ion or Na-ion battery fabrication, is preferred
  • Open to Indian nationals

Among equally qualified and experienced candidates, SC/ST candidates will be preferred.

Salary and duration

  • Rs 67,000 per month plus 10% HRA
  • Duration: one year

How to prepare for the Research Associate interview

  • Electrochemistry: explain cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic cycling and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and how you read each result.
  • Electrolytes in the cold: why ionic conductivity and interfacial resistance limit low-temperature performance, and strategies such as co-solvents, additives and salt concentration.
  • Cell fabrication: electrode slurry preparation, coin-cell assembly in a glovebox, and lab safety practice.
  • Characterisation: XRD, SEM and FTIR or Raman, and what each tells you about an electrode or electrolyte.
  • Your research talk: a short summary of your PhD, leading with your best energy-storage data if you have it.
