Job Description
NUS Electrical and Computer Engineering is hiring a Research Fellow in integrated nonlinear and quantum photonics. The project combines quantum light generation, manipulation, transmission and single-photon detection on one chip. It has three strands: efficient nonlinear devices in van der Waals–silicon nitride hybrid waveguides; superconducting single-photon detectors integrated with waveguides; and efficient photon-pair sources in periodically poled lithium tantalate. You would handle modelling, design, nanofabrication and optical testing.
At a glance
- Position: Research Fellow
- Department: Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Design and Engineering
- Location: Kent Ridge Campus, Singapore
- Degree: PhD in photonics, optical engineering, EEE, applied physics or similar
- Posted: 24 July 2026
- Apply: open until filled (re-checked 14 October 2026)
Research activities
- Develop high-efficiency nonlinear devices in van der Waals–Si₃N₄ hybrid waveguides (confinement, phase matching, loss, conversion efficiency)
- Develop waveguide-integrated superconducting single-photon detectors, optimising absorption, detection efficiency, timing and compatibility with quantum photonic circuits
- Develop quantum light sources in periodically poled lithium tantalate: spontaneous parametric down-conversion, quasi-phase matching, pair-generation efficiency and spectral purity
- Carry out theory, simulation, device design, nanofabrication, optical characterisation and experiments
- Collaborate with researchers in integrated photonics, nonlinear and quantum optics, superconducting photonics and materials
What NUS is looking for
- A PhD in photonics, optical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, applied physics or a related field
- A strong background in integrated photonics, nonlinear optics, quantum optics or nanophotonics
- Research experience with nonlinear optical materials, van der Waals materials, waveguides, quantum light sources, superconducting single-photon detectors or nanofabrication
- Strong grounding in electromagnetic theory, waveguide optics, SHG, SPDC and quasi-phase matching
- Proficiency in numerical modelling of waveguides, photonic structures and nonlinear processes

How to prepare for this application
- Prepare a short talk on one waveguide device you designed and measured.
- Refresh the maths of quasi-phase matching and SPDC pair rates.
- If you have fabricated superconducting nanowires or poled crystals, lead with that.
- Explain how on-chip sources and detectors could help quantum communication.
