Stockholm University’s Department of Philosophy is also hiring a researcher in philosophy of science for ERC DECIDE. This researcher will lead a work package on collective decision-making in setting scientific research priorities, investigating the procedures of the US Astronomy Decadal Surveys and developing normative recommendations, drawing on social epistemology, political philosophy of science and values in science. About DECIDE

In astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology, research often runs at a scale no single lab can manage, instruments can cost billions of euros, and big experiments need funding from several agencies over decades, so only a few are ever built. DECIDE asks how scientists do, and should, decide which ones to pursue, and aims to build a new framework for that choice. Its main case study is the US Astronomy Decadal Survey. The team is the PI, two postdoctoral researchers and one PhD student. Candidates are assessed on their submitted materials and possibly an interview.

What Stockholm University is looking for

• A doctoral degree (Swedish or equivalent)

Nice to have

• A strong research background in social epistemology of science, political philosophy of science or values in science
• A high-quality research proposal relevant to DECIDE
• Teaching competence in theoretical philosophy
• Experience with philosophy of astronomy (not required)

Pay and location

Stockholm University sets the salary individually; the advert gives no figure. A generous travel budget is included.
