How the IIT Kharagpur rolling PhD admission works

Most IITs open a window twice a year and shut it. IIT Kharagpur keeps the form open. The page states that processing happens at least quarterly by each academic unit, and that any unprocessed application stays valid until the end of the next quarter. So a form submitted now is considered in the current round and, if it is not taken up, the following one.

The call covers all disciplines, including engineering, science, humanities, management and medicine.

Which route to choose

  • Regular with Institute Assistantship: the standard full-time route, with an assistantship from the institute
  • Individual Fellowship: for candidates holding CSIR, UGC, DBT, ICMR or INSPIRE support
  • Sponsored: for candidates sent and paid by an employer
  • Working Professionals: a separate portal, listed below

The DPEF fellowship

The Director’s Platinum Jubilee Excellence PhD Fellowship is for candidates who place in the top 50 of GATE 2026 and choose to do their PhD at IIT Kharagpur. It pays Rs 80,000 a month for the first two years and Rs 90,000 a month for the next three, subject to meeting the institute’s admission criteria. That is well above the standard national fellowship, and it is the strongest reason on this page to look at IIT Kharagpur if your GATE rank is high.

How to apply

Regular, individual fellowship and sponsored candidates apply on the IIT Kharagpur PhD application portal. Working professionals use a separate portal. Only one application is allowed. Duplicate applications are rejected and the fee is not refunded, so choose your department and route before you pay.

What to watch

Because admission is rolling, the useful date is not a deadline but the quarter boundary. A form sitting with a unit at the end of a quarter is picked up in that unit’s next processing round. If you want a January start, apply early in a quarter. A form submitted near the end of one waits longer.

How to prepare for this application

  • Apply once, carefully. Only one application is allowed and duplicates are rejected without a refund. Settle on your department and route first.
  • Check your GATE 2026 rank against DPEF. A top-50 rank is worth Rs 80,000 a month here. Nothing else on the page comes close.
  • Time it to the quarter. Units process at least quarterly, so applying early in a quarter gets you seen sooner.
  • Pick the right portal. Working professionals have their own link; using the wrong one wastes the fee.
  • Write to the department. With rolling admission, a supervisor who wants you matters more than the calendar.
