The work

The team uses functional genomics to unpick the deep biology of cellular rejuvenation and to restore cell health and resilience. In this post you would build physiologically relevant in vitro and ex vivo disease models, then tie them to in vivo studies to find interventions that reverse disease-associated cell states.

The work runs end to end: designing research strategies to find causal regulators of cell state, ageing, regeneration and disease; developing, benchmarking and validating disease cell models of age-related cell states; scaling assays so candidate interventions can be screened across models, and feeding data-driven decisions about which candidates and models move forward; designing and interpreting in vivo studies that test candidates and benchmark the models against in vitro findings; and working out the mechanism of action behind promising interventions so that targets and modalities can be prioritised.

What you need

  • A PhD in biology, cell biology, physiology or a related field, with 0 to 3 years of post-PhD experience
  • A proven record of working out complex age-associated disease mechanisms, for example in kidney, lung, liver or skin
  • Hands-on experience with in vitro and in vivo disease assays
  • Preferred: a background in ageing biology, regeneration, fibrosis, inflammation, metabolic disease or neurodegeneration; experience dissecting mechanism of action for gene targets, small molecules, peptides or biologics; high-throughput screening or functional genomics assay development; direct experience with in vivo lung, kidney, liver or endothelial chronic disease models; and computational biology or bioinformatics

About the employer

Altos Labs works on cell rejuvenation: restoring cell health and resilience to reverse disease, injury and the disabilities that build up through life. It runs discovery science centres in San Diego, the San Francisco Bay Area and Cambridge in the UK, and has been named one of the top three biotechnology companies and listed twice on the Forbes Best Startups in America list.

How to apply

Apply through the Altos Labs job page. No closing date is given, so apply early. Check the visa position before you start. US research employers differ on whether they sponsor, and some adverts say outright that they will not.
