The work

You would act as the scientific lead for a segment of the neurodegeneration portfolio: shaping the research questions, designing robust experiments and driving studies through to conclusions someone can act on.

The work includes designing and running in vivo studies in rodent models of neurodegeneration, choosing models, timepoints and endpoints to suit the biological question and the stage of the programme. You would process and analyse rodent and human brain tissue, from dissection, regional sampling, fixation, cryopreservation and sectioning through to molecular, biochemical and histological characterisation. You would develop quantitative readouts for pathology, tracking protein aggregation, neuroinflammation, cell loss and vascular integrity.

Alongside that, the advert asks you to champion scientific rigour: experimental rigour, blinding, randomisation, data provenance and reproducibility, embedded in daily practice. That is an unusually direct statement for a job advert, and it tells you what the team values. You would also work across in vivo pharmacology, histology, molecular biology, computational and programme management teams, plus external collaborators and contract research organisations.

What you need

  • A PhD in neuroscience or a related field, with 1 or more years of postdoctoral or industry research focused on neurodegeneration
  • A robust grasp of neurodegenerative disease biology, including an honest view of what rodent models can and cannot show
  • An established publication record and experience presenting at conferences
  • Extensive hands-on experience processing and analysing rodent and human brain tissue
  • Practical experience with animal surgery, behaviour and vascular biology, and skill in imaging and behavioural analysis
  • Experience with CNS therapeutic modalities such as AAV approaches, antisense oligonucleotides or small molecules
  • Strong quantitative and statistical judgement, so studies are properly powered and results are read without over-extrapolation

About the employer

Altos Labs works on cell rejuvenation: restoring cell health and resilience to reverse disease, injury and the disabilities that build up through life. It runs discovery science centres in San Diego, the San Francisco Bay Area and Cambridge in the UK, and has been named one of the top three biotechnology companies and listed twice on the Forbes Best Startups in America list.

How to apply

Apply through the Altos Labs job page. No closing date is given, so apply early. Check the visa position before you start. US research employers differ on whether they sponsor, and some adverts say outright that they will not.

How to prepare for this application

  • Statistical judgement is a stated requirement. Show a study you powered and the reasoning behind it.
  • Rigour practices are named. Blinding, randomisation and data provenance belong in your answers.
  • CNS modality experience helps. AAV, ASOs or small molecules, by name.
  • Check sponsorship before you invest time. It is the biggest single filter on US research applications from overseas.
