At a glance
- Post: Scientist in Spatial Omics Technology
- Where: Arc Institute, Palo Alto, California, USA
- Closing date: none given. The post is open until filled
- Pay: from $128,500 a year
Read the official Arc Institute advertisement before you apply.
The work
Spatial omics measures which molecules sit where inside a tissue. That is the gap between knowing a cell type exists and knowing where it sits and what it touches. Building those methods is instrument work as much as biology: custom imaging, fluidics, and assays that behave the same way on every section.
The post sits in Arc’s technology development effort and is advertised as a fixed-term contract. You would be developing the measurement itself, so the job rewards people who enjoy making a hard method routine.
What you need
- A PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, genomics, bioengineering or a related field, with 2 to 5 or more years of experience in academia or biotechnology
- Extensive experience in spatial omics technology or product development
- Hands-on experience with custom imaging or fluidic systems, including instrument troubleshooting
- Hands-on experience with tissue or organoid sample preparation and with in situ imaging assays such as HCR, MERFISH, seqFISH, RCA or in situ sequencing
- A plus: tissue microarray or low-input histology, image processing or spatial data analysis, and a background in neuroscience, stem cell biology or immunology
About the employer
Arc Institute is an independent nonprofit research organisation working at the interface of artificial intelligence and biology. It was founded in 2021, is based in Palo Alto, and partners with Stanford University, UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco. Its own pitch is that its scientists get long-term funding and industry-scale resources while staying free to chase high-risk, long-horizon questions.
How to apply
Apply through the Arc Institute job page. No closing date is given, so apply early. Check the visa position before you start. US research employers differ on whether they sponsor, and some adverts say outright that they will not.

How to prepare for this application
- Name the assays you have run. MERFISH, seqFISH and HCR are listed by name in the advert.
- Instrument troubleshooting is explicit. This is a hands-on technology post, so say what you have fixed and how.
- It is a fixed-term contract. Check the term before you move for it.
- Check sponsorship before you invest time. It is the biggest single filter on US research applications from overseas.
