Job Description

A*STAR’s Quantum Innovation Centre (Q.InC) is hiring a Research Scientist in photonics to develop integrated quantum light sources for photonic quantum processors. The focus is wafer-scale poling and advanced characterisation of thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN), a leading platform for on-chip sources of entangled and squeezed light. Much of the job is automation: building control, data-acquisition and screening systems so that large numbers of devices can be tested quickly and fed back to the fabrication team.

At a glance

  • Position: Scientist, Photonics
  • Centre: Quantum Innovation Centre (Q.InC), A*STAR
  • Location: Singapore
  • Degree: PhD in photonics, electrical engineering, applied physics or similar
  • Posted: 8 May 2026 (Req ID 2290)
  • Apply: open until filled (re-checked 14 October 2026)

Responsibilities

  • Build automated control and data-acquisition systems for poling, confocal domain imaging and fibre-to-chip coupling measurements
  • Set up high-throughput wafer-scale screening of poling quality, optical loss and coupling efficiency
  • Integrate optical, electrical and mechanical instruments into a robust automation framework
  • Optimise measurement speed, reproducibility and scalability
  • Turn fabrication variability into testing and feedback strategies that improve yield, working with the fabrication team
  • Mentor junior researchers and students

What A*STAR is looking for

  • A PhD in photonics, electrical engineering, applied physics or a related field
  • A strong background in integrated photonics, preferably thin-film lithium niobate or related platforms
  • Proven experience in lab automation: instrument control, data acquisition and system integration
  • Strong programming skills (e.g. Python or LabVIEW)
  • Hands-on optical characterisation such as laser measurements, fibre coupling and confocal microscopy

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with ferroelectric domain engineering, poling, or nonlinear and quantum photonic devices

Pay and location

A*STAR does not publish a salary in this posting, and no closing date is given.

How to apply

Apply through the official A*STAR job posting. A*STAR’s posting does not give a closing date, so the role is open until filled; ResearchJobs.in will re-check this listing on 14 October 2026. Check the posting for location and work-authorisation details before you apply.

How to prepare for this application

  • Show an automated measurement system you built and how much faster it made testing.
  • Read about periodically poled TFLN sources and what limits their efficiency.
  • Prepare to discuss how you would link test data back to fabrication changes.
  • A*STAR notes the listed criteria are not exhaustive; tailor your cover letter to Q.InC.
