Job Description

IIT Roorkee is hiring an SRF in VLSI and optical transceiver design. The project designs optical transceivers above 100 Gbps for onboard and inter-satellite communication. It is funded by ANRF and based in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Roorkee.

At a glance

  • Post: Senior Research Fellow (1)
  • Where: Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, IIT Roorkee, Uttarakhand
  • Pay: ₹42,000 a month plus HRA
  • Duration: 2 years 6 months
  • Apply by: 11 October 2026, 11:59 pm, through the online form

The advertisement is dated 28 September 2026. The project is “Design of 100+ Gbps Optical Transceivers for Onboard and Inter Satellite Communication”, sponsored by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF). The Principal Investigator is Prof. Darshak Bhatt of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering. Only Indian nationals may apply.

What the VLSI SRF works on

  • Circuit design for high-speed optical transceivers running above 100 Gbps
  • Analog, mixed-signal and RF integrated circuit design for satellite links
  • Design work in tools such as Cadence Virtuoso, Keysight ADS, HFSS or CST Microwave
  • The selected candidate may get a chance to apply for PhD admission

The ad invites candidates with a background in ECE, VLSI, analog/mixed-signal IC design, microelectronics, high-speed communication, photonics or related areas. The IIT Roorkee project jobs page lists the deadline as 5:00 pm; the advertisement PDF says 11:59 pm. Apply early to be safe.

Why this role matters

Satellites are starting to talk to each other with laser links that carry huge amounts of data. The chips that drive those links must be fast, low-power and tough enough for space. Very few groups in India design such chips. This SRF gives you hands-on IC design experience in that area, which the semiconductor industry values highly.

Eligibility

  • Two years of research experience AND a postgraduate degree in basic science, or a graduate or postgraduate degree in a professional course
  • Selection through a national test: CSIR-UGC NET (including lectureship) or GATE
  • Or selection through a national-level exam run by a central agency such as DST, DBT, DAE, DOS, DRDO, MoE, ICAR, ICMR, IIT, IISc, IISER or NISER
  • Desirable: exposure to microelectronics, VLSI, RFIC design and analog circuit design, and skill in Cadence Virtuoso, Keysight ADS, HFSS or CST Microwave
  • Indian nationals only

SC/ST candidates get preference when qualifications and experience are equal. No TA/DA is paid for the interview. The interview may be held online, within a week after the deadline. Bring original certificates for verification.

Pay and duration

  • Senior Research Fellow: ₹42,000 a month plus HRA (the ad does not give the HRA rate)
  • Duration: 2 years 6 months
  • The selected candidate should join as soon as possible

How to apply

Apply through the online application form linked in the advertisement. Upload your CV, degree certificates and experience certificates. For problems with the form, the ad gives the PI’s institute email address.

Key dates

  • Advertisement dated 28 September 2026
  • Last date: 11 October 2026, 11:59 pm (per the PDF)
  • Interview: may be online, within one week after the deadline

How to prepare for this application

  • Check the SRF rule first: two years of research experience plus NET, GATE or an equivalent national test
  • Prepare one analog or RF circuit you designed in Cadence or ADS, with schematics, simulation results and what you would improve
  • Revise high-speed link blocks: transimpedance amplifiers, laser and modulator drivers, CDR and equalisation
  • Be ready to explain noise, bandwidth and power trade-offs at data rates above 100 Gbps
  • Keep your experience certificates ready; the form asks for them
