Job Description

This SRF job in metallurgical engineering at IIT Madras is for one Senior Research Fellow to study the effect of ammonia injection in an ironmaking reactor, by simulation and experiment, in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (Advt. 186/2026).

At a glance

  • Position: Senior Research Fellow (01 vacancy)
  • Where: Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Madras, Chennai
  • Pay: Rs 42,000 a month plus 30% House Rent Allowance
  • Duration: Initially four months, extendable on performance
  • Apply by: 1 October 2026

The coordinator is Prof. Sabita Sarkar of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. The advertisement is dated 17 September 2026 and describes an immediate requirement, so the four-month initial term should be read as a start rather than the whole of the work.

What the CFD and reactor work involves

  • ANSYS FLUENT simulation of multiphase flow and chemical reaction in a metallurgical reactor
  • Experimental validation of the simulations, and reporting the findings
  • Understanding how ammonia injection changes behaviour inside the ironmaking reactor

Why this role matters

Ironmaking is one of the hardest industrial processes to decarbonise, and ammonia is being examined as a way to displace part of the carbon in the reactor. The modelling is genuinely difficult because gas, solid and reaction chemistry are coupled, and very few people can both run the multiphase simulation and check it against a real gas-solid reactor. This post asks for both, which makes it a strong line on a CV for anyone heading towards process metallurgy or green steel research.

Eligibility

  • Minimum undergraduate degree in engineering (Chemical, Mechanical or Metallurgy)
  • Two years of research experience
  • A valid GATE score
  • Proficiency in CFD, multiphase flow and chemical reactions, with prior experience of solvers such as FLUENT or COMSOL required
  • Experimental work experience in gas-solid reactors is an added advantage

Please note an inconsistency inside the official advertisement: the job description asks for a candidate who has completed a Master’s degree in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering, while the qualification table gives the requirement as a minimum undergraduate degree in engineering with two years of research experience and a valid GATE score. Both wordings appear in the notice as published. Applicants who meet only one of the two should write to the Office of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research before the closing date.

Pay and duration

  • Rs 42,000 a month plus 30% House Rent Allowance
  • Initially four months, later extendable based on performance
  • One vacancy; the post is on a purely contract basis

How to apply

Apply online only, through the IIT Madras ICSR current openings page, selecting advertisement number Advt. 186/2026. The last date for submission of the online application is 1 October 2026. A separate application is needed for each post, and the form cannot be edited once submitted. Hard copies are not to be sent to the Institute; a printout is required later at document verification. The full notice is listed on the ICSR careers page.

How to prepare for this application

  • Describe one multiphase FLUENT or COMSOL case you set up yourself: the model choice (Eulerian, DPM, species transport), the mesh, and how you decided it had converged
  • Be ready to talk about reaction kinetics in a gas-solid system, not just fluid flow; the project is about chemistry inside the reactor as much as about the flow field
  • If you have run a lab-scale reactor, quantify it — scale, instrumentation, what you measured and what the uncertainty was
  • Keep your GATE score card and experience certificates to hand; the two-year research experience is counted after the minimum qualifying degree
  • Ask about the path beyond the initial four months at interview, so you go in with a clear picture of the project's sanctioned duration
