Job Description
A new DOE-funded collaboration between Berkeley Lab’s ESnet division and QuEra Computing is hiring a theoretical physics postdoc to explore optical interconnects for distributed quantum computing with neutral atoms. The two-year project, ‘Scalable Neutral-Atom Quantum Computing via Local-Area Quantum Communications Enabled by Atomic Ensemble Qubits’, studies how micro-ensembles of atoms can collectively emit and store single photons for fast, high-fidelity remote entanglement between quantum processors, without optical cavities.

What you will do
- Develop theory for quantum light–matter interactions in distributed quantum computing
- Model Rydberg-mediated interactions for single-atom and ensemble qubits, and optical trapping and transport of atoms
- Evaluate atomic-ensemble qubits as optical quantum memories and deterministic single-photon sources for remote entanglement
- Study how ensemble qubits fit into multi-zone, fault-tolerant processor architectures
- Work closely with experimentalists and engineers at ESnet and QuEra, and publish and present results
What Berkeley Lab is looking for
- A PhD and/or previous postdoc in quantum optics, quantum networking or quantum computing
- A strong theoretical background in trapping and coherent control of neutral atoms for quantum information and communication
- Extensive theory and numerics on light–matter interfaces and Rydberg interactions
- Expertise modelling spin-wave quantum memories, single-photon sources and Rydberg gates
- A solid understanding of fault tolerance and its implications for scalable architectures
Nice to have
- Familiarity with experimental hardware and control systems
- Experience in interdisciplinary teams and strong communication
Pay and location
Berkeley Lab gives a monthly salary range of US$8,321–10,418, set on a union step scale by years of postdoctoral experience and starting at US$8,321 or above. The appointment is full time for two years, renewable depending on performance and funding.
