Job Description
PsiQuantum is hiring a Photonics Circuit Designer in Palo Alto to model, simulate and optimise high-performance integrated photonic circuits, including the photon-pair sources at the heart of its general-purpose silicon photonic quantum computer.
At a glance
- Role: Photonics Circuit Designer
- Where: Palo Alto, California, USA
- Pay: US$140,000–165,000 base in the Bay Area (US$120,000–145,000 elsewhere in the US)
- Level: PhD or equivalent in electrical engineering or physics, plus 5 years in integrated photonics
- Apply: open until filled (re-checked 11 October 2026)
About the photonic circuit modelling role
- Build data-driven models of linear photonic devices at different scales and with different methods
- Design and optimise photonic circuits
- Fully simulate complex circuits, including photon-pair generation through spontaneous four-wave mixing
- Draw circuit schematics and coordinate circuit layout
- Analyse data to understand how devices and circuits perform
- Work with component design and characterisation teams to validate circuits
In a photonic quantum computer, every decibel of optical loss and every imperfect component turns into errors, so the quality, consistency and manufacturability of photonic devices matter as much as the architecture. These engineering roles work on that foundation.
What PsiQuantum is looking for
- A PhD or equivalent in electrical engineering or physics
- 5 years of relevant work or academic research in integrated photonics
- In-depth knowledge of photonic devices, their performance metrics and test methods
- Extensive photonic design experience with commercial software, and experience with circuit layout
- Extensive Python for scientific work and data handling, plus strong communication
Nice to have
- Experience with the Wolfram Language
Pay and location
PsiQuantum lists a US base pay range of US$120,000–145,000, or US$140,000–165,000 in the Bay Area. The role is based in Palo Alto, California.
How to apply
Apply through the official PsiQuantum job posting. PsiQuantum’s posting does not give a closing date, so the role is open until filled; ResearchJobs.in will re-check this listing on 11 October 2026. Check the posting for location and work-authorisation details before you apply.

How to prepare for this application
- Four-wave mixing: revise phase matching, pump power, spectral purity and multi-photon noise in photon-pair sources.
- Circuit simulation: know how S-matrix or compact-model circuit simulators work and their limits.
- Variability: be ready to discuss how fabrication variation spreads through a large circuit.
- Data analysis: bring a Python analysis that revealed something unexpected about a device.
- Mathematica: Wolfram Language experience is a plus; mention it if you have it.
About PsiQuantum
PsiQuantum was founded in 2016 to build and deploy million-qubit, fault-tolerant quantum computers. Its architecture is based on silicon photonics, using high-volume semiconductor manufacturing with partners such as GlobalFoundries. In 2024 it announced government-funded projects to build its first utility-scale quantum computers in Brisbane, Australia, and Chicago, Illinois, and its applications teams work with large companies on commercial use cases.
