Job Description

PsiQuantum is hiring a Silicon Photonics Engineer in Palo Alto to design and implement next-generation photonic integrated circuits across the whole development cycle, from device design and layout to foundry tapeouts and root-cause analysis.

At a glance

  • Role: Silicon Photonics Engineer
  • Where: Palo Alto, California, USA
  • Pay: US$139,800–164,300 base in the Bay Area; lower ranges in other zones
  • Level: PhD or equivalent in electrical engineering or physics, plus 5 years in integrated photonics
  • Apply: open until filled (re-checked 11 October 2026)

About the silicon photonics engineer role

  • Work with device, hardware and system design teams on the overall development of photonic systems and devices
  • Support foundry tapeouts with device design, design of experiments, layout, design verification, PDK development and software
  • Write thorough documentation for tapeouts
  • Resolve technical issues with components, parts or systems for component and system teams
  • Use quantitative analysis to find the root cause of difficult technical problems and put corrective actions in place

In a photonic quantum computer, every decibel of optical loss and every imperfect component turns into errors, so the quality, consistency and manufacturability of photonic devices matter as much as the architecture. These engineering roles work on that foundation.

What PsiQuantum is looking for

  • A PhD or equivalent in electrical engineering or physics
  • 5 years of relevant work or academic research in integrated photonics
  • Strong computational and analytical skills applied to device design and performance evaluation
  • In-depth knowledge of photonic devices, their metrics and test methods
  • Extensive design experience with commercial tools such as the Lumerical suite, and layout experience with IPKISS, gdsfactory or similar
  • Extensive Python for scientific work and data analysis, and clear communication

Pay and location

PsiQuantum lists base pay by location zone, from US$139,800–164,300 in zone 1 (Bay Area and New York City) to US$97,900–115,000 in zone 4 (for example Nashville, Phoenix and many remote locations). The role is listed in Palo Alto, California.

How to apply

Apply through the official PsiQuantum job posting. PsiQuantum’s posting does not give a closing date, so the role is open until filled; ResearchJobs.in will re-check this listing on 11 October 2026. Check the posting for location and work-authorisation details before you apply.

How to prepare for this application

  • Device fundamentals: revise waveguides, MMIs, directional couplers and ring resonators, and their sensitivity to fabrication.
  • Tapeout experiments: prepare how you would design experiments on a shuttle run to learn the most from one tapeout.
  • Root cause: have a structured story of diagnosing a device failure from data.
  • PDK work: explain what makes a PDK component trustworthy for other designers.
  • Documentation: bring an example of tapeout documentation or a design review you prepared.

About PsiQuantum

PsiQuantum was founded in 2016 to build and deploy million-qubit, fault-tolerant quantum computers. Its architecture is based on silicon photonics, using high-volume semiconductor manufacturing with partners such as GlobalFoundries. In 2024 it announced government-funded projects to build its first utility-scale quantum computers in Brisbane, Australia, and Chicago, Illinois, and its applications teams work with large companies on commercial use cases.
