Job Description

This postdoc in quantum dot spin qubits is a Research Associate post at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge. You will control electron and nuclear spins in GaAs quantum dots with light and microwaves. Apply by 15 November 2026.

At a glance

  • Position: Research Associate (fixed term), reference KA51419
  • Group: Prof. Dorian Gangloff, Department of Physics
  • Where: Cavendish Laboratory, Ray Dolby Centre, Cambridge, UK
  • Pay: £37,694–£46,049 a year (Research Associate); £34,610–£35,608 (Research Assistant, before PhD award)
  • Duration: 9 months in the first instance
  • Apply: 15 November 2026

About the quantum dot spin control postdoc

  • Design and run experiments on coherent control and dynamical decoupling of electronic and nuclear spins in GaAs quantum dots
  • Work with a team of PhD students
  • Help develop the experimental set-ups towards quantum networking
  • The role is partly funded by the Integrated Quantum Networks Hub

Why this role matters

Quantum dots are among the brightest single-photon sources, and their spins can store quantum information. Taming the nuclear spins around them is a key step to quantum network nodes. The post links you to the UK’s national quantum networks hub.

What University of Cambridge is looking for

  • A PhD in physics or a related field, or close to completing one
  • Significant experimental expertise with solid-state spin qubits and their coherent control
  • Experience in quantum optics, ideally with semiconductor quantum dots

Pay and location

The posted salary is £37,694 to £46,049 a year for a Research Associate. If you have submitted your PhD but not yet received it, you start as a Research Assistant at £34,610 to £35,608. You move up once the PhD is awarded. Funds cover 9 months in the first instance. The university says all employees must be eligible to live and work in the UK, so check visa rules before you apply.

How to prepare for this application

  • Read the group's work: Dorian Gangloff's papers on nuclear-spin ensembles and quantum memories in quantum dots.
  • Revise spin control: Rabi and Ramsey sequences, spin echo, CPMG and other dynamical decoupling schemes.
  • Know the GaAs nuclear bath: hyperfine coupling, the Overhauser field and why it limits electron coherence.
  • Show lab range: lasers, cryostats, RF and microwave electronics, and strain or optical tuning.
  • Quote KA51419: use the reference on your application and in any email to the group.
