Job Description

IIT Bombay has a rolling advertisement for faculty positions at IIT Bombay: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor, under Advertisement No. L-10/25-26. Applications are open on the institute’s portal until 31 December 2026 and are processed periodically, so there is no single round to wait for.

At a glance

  • Posts: Assistant Professor (Grade I and II), Associate Professor, Professor
  • Units: 16 departments, 12 centres and 3 schools
  • Who can apply: Indian nationals, PIOs, OCIs and foreign nationals (foreign nationals on contract of up to 5 years)
  • Apply by: 31 December 2026, 23:59, online only

Unlike a one-off recruitment drive, a rolling advertisement lets you apply when your profile is ready. Each academic unit sets its own areas of specialisation and extra eligibility rules, published as two separate documents on the advertisement page. Read both before you apply.

Where the openings are

  • Departments: Aerospace, Biosciences & Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil, Computer Science & Engineering, Earth Sciences, Economics, Electrical, Energy Science, Environmental Science, IEOR, Mathematics, Mechanical, Metallurgy & Materials Science, and Physics
  • Centres include Machine Intelligence and Data Science, Semiconductor Technologies, Climate Studies, Systems and Control, Policy Studies, and the Koita Centre for Digital Health
  • Schools: Desai Sethi School of Entrepreneurship, IDC School of Design, and Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management

Unit-specific requirements can be demanding. For example, the Chemistry criteria ask for at least five Scopus/SCI-indexed papers, two of them from post-Ph.D. work, while Aerospace asks for five publications, three of them in indexed journals. Check the document for your unit.

Eligibility

  • A Ph.D. with first class or equivalent in the preceding degree, and an excellent academic record throughout
  • Assistant Professor Grade I: at least three years of post-Ph.D. teaching, research or professional experience, plus a good publication record
  • Assistant Professor Grade II: everything required for Grade I except the three years of post-Ph.D. experience; you move to Grade I once you meet it
  • Associate Professor: at least six years of post-Ph.D. experience, three of them at Assistant Professor Grade I level or equivalent
  • Professor: at least ten years of post-Ph.D. experience, four of them at Associate Professor level or equivalent
  • IDC School of Design has its own criteria, including a route for candidates without a Ph.D.

Reservation follows Government of India rules. Women and applicants from under-represented groups are encouraged to apply. If you apply to more than one academic unit, you need a separate application for each. Candidates who applied in the last two years may highlight how their CV has improved since.

Pay and duration

  • The advertisement page does not list pay figures; appointments follow the pay rules for IIT faculty
  • About 90% of faculty and research staff live on campus; the institute tries to house all faculty, though new faculty may first stay off campus
  • The institute encourages consultancy and industry links, and runs the SINE incubator for faculty start-ups

How to apply

Apply only through the IIT Bombay online application portal (Pragati). Hard-copy and emailed applications are not accepted. Upload your degree certificates, a certificate showing your Ph.D. defence date, and signed experience certificates stating designation, pay and tenure. Government employees must apply through proper channels or produce a No Objection Certificate. Questions can be sent to facultyrecruitment@iitb.ac.in.

Key dates

  • Advertisement published 1 January 2026
  • Applications processed periodically
  • Last date: 31 December 2026, 23:59

How to prepare for this application

  • Download both annexures: the areas of specialisation and the unit-wise eligibility criteria decide whether you are shortlisted.
  • Count your papers honestly: many units set a minimum number of indexed or first-author papers; make yours easy to verify.
  • One unit, one tailored application: write a separate research statement for each unit you apply to.
  • Prepare a seminar: shortlisted candidates usually give a talk to the unit, so have a 45-minute version of your research ready.
  • Paperwork: collect signed experience certificates and your Ph.D. defence-date certificate now; missing documents slow things down.
