Job Description
Uppsala University’s Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology is offering a PhD position in medical microbiology on plasmids and antibiotic resistance. The project asks how differences in plasmid copy number in pathogenic bacteria shape the evolution of resistance and the horizontal transfer of genes.

About the plasmid and antibiotic resistance PhD project
- Study the mechanisms and dynamics of plasmid copy number in pathogenic bacteria
- Test how copy-number variation affects resistance evolution and horizontal gene transfer
- Work with a large collection of well-characterised microorganisms and infection models
- Take doctoral courses; teaching and administration may make up to 20% of the job
The research environment
IMBIM’s research covers biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, tumour biology, comparative genetics, functional genomics, immunology, bacteriology and virology. Most of it is fundamental research with relevance to health and disease in animals and humans, and the student will have access to well-characterised microbial collections and infection models.

What Uppsala University is looking for
- A master’s degree in genetics, microbiology, evolutionary biology or a related field, or equivalent credits
- Experience in bacterial genetics (required)
- Practical cell and molecular microbiology experience (highly desired)
- Very good spoken and written English
Nice to have
- Working knowledge of bioinformatics and statistics
Pay and location
The advert says salary follows Uppsala University’s local agreement. Swedish doctoral students are salaried employees rather than stipend holders, and the salary follows the university’s scale for doctoral students. The post is full time in Uppsala, starting as soon as possible or as agreed.
