Job Description

Prof. Raghunandan M. Rao in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Gandhinagar is hiring a Post-Doctoral Fellow for a project on range-based localisation of targets that lie outside the convex hull of the anchors. Localising a target that sits outside the region enclosed by the reference anchors is hard, and it is the normal case for vehicle-centric and infrastructure-free systems. Theory already gives scaling laws for time-of-arrival (ToA) localisation in these geometries; the project extends this to time-difference-of-arrival (TDoA) and tests it under real synchronisation, bandwidth and multipath limits.

What the fellow will do

  • Build a theoretical framework for TDoA localisation beyond the convex hull, including Cramer-Rao lower bound and dilution-of-precision analysis and error scaling laws
  • Lead the development, synchronisation and calibration of a localisation testbed based on USRP software radios and mmWave radar
  • Measure how localisation error scales with target distance, SNR, bandwidth and anchor geometry, and refine the models with the measured data
  • Carry out analytical derivations, Monte-Carlo simulations, signal processing implementations and large measurement campaigns
  • Mentor M.Tech and PhD students on the project and contribute to journal and conference papers

Eligibility

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering or a relevant area. Candidates who have submitted their PhD thesis may also apply
  • An educational background in communications or signal processing
  • At least 60% marks or an equivalent grade from graduation onwards, and at least 55% or equivalent in class 10 and class 12
  • Desirable: publications, preprints or thesis work in communications or signal processing; strong maths (random processes, linear algebra, communication theory); experience with large MATLAB or Python wireless simulation codebases; hands-on work with USRPs and RF sensors

IIT Gandhinagar notes that meeting the minimum criteria does not guarantee shortlisting; it may apply a higher cut-off, and it may choose not to fill the post in this round.
