Job Description
Mid Sweden University is recruiting two PhD students for VINES, a Sweden-USA 6G initiative funded by Vinnova, the Swedish Research Council and the US National Science Foundation. VINES aims to make converged 5G/6G and Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) resilient end to end for smart manufacturing, combining ML-based prediction, integrated sensing and communication, and deterministic scheduling. The fully funded four-year positions include a research visit with the Universities of Connecticut and Iowa.

About the two 6G PhD profiles
- Profile 1, predictive wireless resilience: channel-aware resource management, prediction of wireless disruptions, ISAC-based awareness and closed-loop adaptation for URLLC
- Profile 2, cross-domain deterministic scheduling: scheduling across wireless and TSN, hierarchical resource partitioning, end-to-end reservation and runtime verification
- Theoretical modelling, algorithm design, simulation and experimental evaluation
- Joint publications and international conference presentations, and a research visit to the USA

What Mid Sweden University is looking for
- General entry: a second-cycle degree, or 240 credits with 60 at second-cycle level, or equivalent
- Specific entry: at least 90 credits in computer engineering or equivalent
- A suitable MSc, for example in wireless communication, electrical engineering, signal processing, computer engineering or engineering physics
- Excellent English, strong simulation skills (C/C++, Python, MATLAB or similar), and willingness and eligibility to travel, including to the USA
Nice to have
- Profile 1: wireless communications, radio resource management, optimisation, signal processing or ML; 5G/6G, URLLC or ISAC experience
- Profile 2: computer networks, real-time networking, scheduling or distributed systems; TSN or network calculus experience
Pay and location
Salary follows Mid Sweden University’s scale for doctoral students; the advert gives no figure. Positions start on 1 November 2026 or as agreed.
