Job Description

KTH’s School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health is recruiting a Marie Skłodowska-Curie doctoral student to study how electrolytes behave inside nanoporous electrodes. The project asks how pore size, shape and surface chemistry govern ion confinement and charge storage, separating the roles of ions inside and outside the pores. It focuses on ionic liquid electrolytes for batteries and supercapacitors, studied with advanced NMR techniques and targeted computer modelling.

At a glance

  • Position: Doctoral student (1 post), MSCA, up to four years full time
  • Subject: Chemistry
  • Supervisor: Sergey Dvinskikh (proposed), sergeid@kth.se
  • Salary: Starting salary SEK 33,700 per month (about EUR 2,991) plus MSCA allowances, per the advert
  • Reference: PA-2026-2784
  • Apply by: 1 October 2026
  • Apply: 1 October 2026

About the electrochemical interfaces PhD

  • Study electrolytes in nanoporous carbon electrodes, including how pore size, morphology and surface chemistry affect ion confinement
  • Distinguish and quantify in-pore and ex-pore ions
  • Follow ion transport during charging and discharging with advanced NMR methods
  • Complement experiments with targeted computational modelling to build structure-property relationships

Marie Skłodowska-Curie eligibility

This is an MSCA-funded doctoral position, so the standard MSCA rules apply: you must not already hold a doctorate when recruited, and you must not have lived or had your main activity (work, studies) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years before recruitment. MSCA positions also include a mobility allowance and, where applicable, a family allowance on top of the salary.

What to include in your application

KTH asks for certified copies of diplomas, grades and English language certificates (with translations if needed), a CV, a letter of at most two pages on why you want to do research and how it links to your studies and goals, and representative publications or technical reports. Applications must arrive by midnight CET/CEST on the closing date.

What KTH is looking for

  • A master’s degree in chemistry, physical chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, electrochemistry or a close field
  • No doctoral degree at the date of recruitment
  • Not resident or mainly active in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years before recruitment
  • English equivalent to English B/6

Nice to have

  • Experience with NMR spectroscopy

Pay and location

KTH states a starting salary of SEK 33,700 per month (about EUR 2,991, before tax) under its doctoral salary agreement, plus the MSCA mobility allowance and possible family allowance.

How to prepare for this application

  • Check the mobility rule first: MSCA positions exclude people who have lived in Sweden for more than a year recently.
  • NMR experience: any solid-state or diffusion NMR work is a strong merit.
  • Electrochemistry: describe any supercapacitor or battery testing you have done.
  • Attach reports: KTH asks for representative publications or reports.
  • Deadline: applications close on 1 October 2026.
