Job Description

MAX IV, Lund University’s synchrotron, is hiring a beamline scientist for TomoWISE, a new tomography beamline for materials science aimed at sustainability. The scientist joins a small project team (a beamline lead scientist, a research engineer and a data scientist) that is planning, installing and commissioning the beamline, and will help shape its first science programme from early commissioning of the large-beam option in 2028. The post also expects an independent research project in sustainable materials, ideally with MAX IV users.

About MAX IV

MAX IV is Sweden’s national synchrotron light source, a large research infrastructure hosted by Lund University. Its 16 beamlines give researchers from Sweden and abroad intense X-rays for work in engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology, and it receives up to 2,000 scientists a year.

What LU is looking for

  • A PhD in a STEM field
  • A research track record in materials science (for example structural, energy, geological or functional materials)
  • Strong background in tomographic imaging or related X-ray microscopy, with hands-on instrument integration, commissioning and validation (hardware and software)
  • Experimental research experience in microscopy and imaging, preferably with X-rays
  • Taking projects from proposal to publication, and conference and journal experience
  • Fluent spoken and written English

Nice to have

  • Previous work at a synchrotron beamline or similar facility
  • Driving your own research, for example a record of grant applications
  • Scientific programming
  • AI/ML methods for image reconstruction, segmentation or quantitative analysis
  • Work in large teams, including student supervision

Pay and location

Lund University pays a monthly salary set individually; the advert gives no figure. The post is permanent and full time at MAX IV in Lund. On-call duty and a probationary period may apply.
