First Research Engineer in 3D Printing for Life Science (U-PRINT) at Uppsala University
Job Description
Uppsala University’s Department of Medical Cell Biology is hiring a permanent first research engineer for U-PRINT, the university’s additive manufacturing facility for life science. U-PRINT turns researchers’ ideas into working experimental tools, prototypes and custom systems for academic, healthcare and industry users. The engineer will lead complex technical projects hands-on and help run and develop the facility, from CAD and printing to quotes, safety routines and user support. A PhD is required.

About the U-PRINT engineer post
- Turn user needs into specifications, CAD models and working prototypes
- Design and make custom lab tools such as moulds, microfluidic parts, imaging accessories and automation systems
- Work with SLA/DLP, SLS, MJF and FDM printing and post-processing
- Build or integrate electronics, sensors and software-controlled setups
- Manage facility projects, documentation, quotes, billing, procurement, SOPs and lab safety
- Give lectures, workshops and demonstrations

About the department
The Department of Medical Cell Biology has more than 110 staff, including about 25 doctoral students, 10 postdocs and 40 researchers, teachers and professors.
What UU is looking for
- A PhD in additive manufacturing, engineering, materials science or a related field
- Hands-on experience with several AM technologies
- Strong 3D modelling, CAD and design-for-AM skills
- Relevant publications, patents or industry collaborations
- Programming or scripting, for example Python
- Electronics, sensors or software control of lab instruments
- Strong spoken and written English
Nice to have
- Experience in core facilities or research infrastructure
- Quotations, cost estimates, billing or procurement
- Parametric or generative design, simulation and mesh optimisation
- Life science or biomedical applications, material characterisation, automation or IoT
Pay and location
Uppsala University sets salaries individually; the advert gives no figure. The post is permanent and full time in Uppsala.
