Job Description
Argonne’s Applied Materials Division is hiring a postdoctoral appointee in electrochemistry for its Emergent Materials and Processes Group. The research is on metallisation and decarbonised metal production using aqueous, non-aqueous and molten-salt electrolysis, including developing electrolytes and measuring the physico-chemical properties of candidate systems. The post requires on-site work five days a week.
At a glance
- Position: Postdoctoral Appointee (req. 423350)
- Division: Applied Materials, Emergent Materials and Processes Group
- Posted: 26 August 2026
- PhD: Typically within the last 0-5 years
- Pay: $72,879 to $121,465
- Apply: open until filled (re-checked 13 October 2026)
About the electrochemistry postdoc
- Research metal production and processing by aqueous, non-aqueous and molten-salt electrolysis
- Develop electrolytes and measure their physico-chemical properties
- Develop new processes for metals production
- Write reports, present and publish
Why it matters
Producing metals by electrolysis powered by clean electricity is one route to cutting emissions from metals production. The group works on electrolytes and processes that could make those routes more efficient.
Before you apply
Argonne asks applicants to disclose any participation in foreign government sponsored or affiliated activities (US Department of Energy Order 486.1A), and its posts may require a government access authorisation after hiring. Offers depend on a background check.
What Argonne is looking for
- A recent PhD in chemistry, materials science, metallurgy, electrochemistry, electrometallurgy, chemical engineering or a related field
- Electrochemical analysis and electrodeposition of metals in aqueous, non-aqueous and molten-salt electrolytes
- Industrial experience in materials synthesis, plating or solution processing
- Glovebox work and safe handling of air-sensitive chemicals
- Problem solving, organisation and time management
Pay and location
Argonne gives an expected hiring range of $72,879 to $121,465 a year for this postdoctoral appointment, depending on qualifications and other factors, plus benefits. It is a fixed-term, full-time post in Lemont, Illinois.
How to apply
Apply through the official Argonne job posting. Argonne’s posting does not give a closing date, so the role is open until filled; ResearchJobs.in will re-check this listing on 13 October 2026. Check the posting for location and work-authorisation details before you apply.
