Job Description
KTH’s School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is hiring a doctoral student in quantum information theory, supervised by Professor Mikael Skoglund. The project, funded by the Swedish Research Council and WACQT, asks what the ultimate limits are on the resources needed and the performance achievable in quantum communication, computation and other information-processing tasks, and how to design protocols that reach those limits. It draws on quantum Shannon theory, entanglement theory and questions of additivity of channel capacities.

About the project
- Study fundamental limits on resources and performance in quantum communication and computation
- Develop explicit protocols that achieve or approach these limits
- Use quantum Shannon theory, entanglement theory and the mathematics of quantum information
- Investigate entropy, mutual information, channel capacities and entanglement measures, and their additivity or non-additivity
- Express these limits in mathematically tractable and computationally accessible forms
Employment terms
KTH notes that only applicants admitted to doctoral studies can be employed as doctoral students. Employment can last at most the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral study, and an employed doctoral student may spend a limited share of time (up to 20%) on departmental duties such as teaching and administration. What KTH is looking for
- A second-cycle (master’s) degree, or 240 credits including 60 at second-cycle level, or equivalent knowledge
- An excellent background in mathematics relevant to information theory, linear algebra and probability
- English equivalent to English B/6
- The ability to work independently, collaborate, act professionally and analyse complex problems
Nice to have
- Prior experience in quantum information theory
Pay and location
KTH employs admitted doctoral students on salary under its doctoral-student agreement for up to four years of full-time study; the posting does not give a figure here.
