Job Description
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NUS is hiring a Research Fellow for the project Meta-Learning of Robust State Estimation for Agile Mobile Robots. The fellow will develop LiDAR-inertial and visual-inertial odometry and multi-sensor fusion that stay reliable in hard conditions, combining model-based estimation with learning, and test it on drones and other agile platforms.
At a glance
- Post: Research Fellow (VIO/LIO and State Estimation)
- Department: Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Design and Engineering
- Duration: 12 months initially, extendable after review
- Posted: 22 April 2026
- Apply: open until filled (re-checked 14 October 2026)
What the post involves
- Develop robust LiDAR-inertial and visual-inertial odometry and multi-sensor fusion for UAVs and agile robots
- Combine filtering, factor-graph optimisation and moving-horizon estimation with learning, including meta-learning
- Implement algorithms in real time on robots and validate them in simulation and field experiments
- Mentor junior Ph.D. students and support project activities
Why this post matters
Reliable state estimation is what lets drones and robots move fast in places where GPS fails, such as tunnels, forests and dark buildings. Mixing classical estimation with learning is an active research direction, and NUS gives access to real platforms for testing.
What NUS is looking for
- A Ph.D. in robotics, electrical engineering, computer science or a related field
- Experience in state estimation, SLAM or sensor fusion
- Strong C++/Python and real-time implementation skills
Nice to have
- Experience with UAV platforms or learning-based estimation
Pay and location
NUS does not state a salary in this advertisement; research staff pay in Singapore follows the institution’s own scales and depends on qualifications and experience.
How to apply
Apply through the official NUS job posting. NUS’s posting does not give a closing date, so the role is open until filled; ResearchJobs.in will re-check this listing on 14 October 2026. Check the posting for location and work-authorisation details before you apply.

How to prepare for this application
- Show real-time systems: estimators you ran on actual robots.
- Classical plus learning: the project mixes both; show experience in each.
- Hard environments: results in low texture or degraded sensors are relevant.
- Mentoring: the post includes guiding Ph.D. students.
About the National University of Singapore
