NISER Bhubaneswar is taking one Junior Research Fellow in its Centre for Medical and Radiation Physics to design, fabricate and characterise Low-Gain Avalanche Detectors for ultra-fast timing, under advertisement NISER/R&D/CMRP2601/28/2026-27.

Low-Gain Avalanche Detectors are silicon sensors with a built-in gain layer that lets them time a particle’s arrival to a few tens of picoseconds. That precision is what makes them interesting for high-energy physics detectors and, increasingly, for medical imaging, where better timing means a sharper image from a lower radiation dose. The project is funded by ANRF.
Why this role matters
Detector development is a craft learned by doing: simulation in TCAD, fabrication, then bench characterisation with real signals. Very few Indian groups build sensors rather than buying them, and this fellowship covers the whole chain, which is a strong foundation for a PhD in instrumentation or medical physics. Note, though, that the advertisement states plainly that it does not lead to a PhD degree at NISER.

Eligibility
- Master’s degree in Physics, or B.E./B.Tech. in Electronics
- A valid CSIR-UGC NET including lectureship, or a valid GATE score
- Desirable: experience with TCAD simulation using Silvaco or Sentaurus, signal processing algorithms, C++ or Python programming, or data acquisition systems
- Age limit 28 years as on 25 September 2026, with relaxation for entitled categories as per rules
The position is purely temporary, initially for eleven months, extendable on satisfactory performance and strictly co-terminus with the project. The advertisement states that it does not lead to any PhD degree at NISER and confers no right or claim to any regular NISER post.

How to prepare for this application
- Learn what the gain layer does: be able to explain why a modest internal gain buys you picosecond timing, and what it costs in noise.
- TCAD is the differentiator: Silvaco or Sentaurus experience is listed as desirable and few applicants will have it, so say so plainly if you do.
- Bring instrumentation experience: oscilloscopes, amplifiers and data acquisition count here as much as coursework.
- Understand the medical angle: read briefly about time-of-flight PET so you can connect timing resolution to image quality.
- Be clear-eyed about the PhD: the advertisement says this does not lead to a NISER PhD, so plan how the eleven months fit your longer path.
